Keanu Perez scored four times, Colton Pimentel had three goals, Ethan Wright tallied two, and Alan Wells found the back of the goal once. “We came out strong and never looked back,” said head coach Josh Martin. “Perimeter defense was stifling, causing a lot of turnovers and our center defense play by Colton Pimentel was lockdown. Keanu and Levi were our engines again on offense, both scoring and getting the whole team involved. Another great game in the pipes by our goalie, Hayden Tolbert.…
This paragraph within the introduction of “The Scarlet Letter” is essential for the establishment of the plot. In this paragraph, the author identifies one of the key symbols within the story: the scarlet letter A that Hester Prynne wears upon her bosom. Assuming that this paragraph was not included within the Custom House Introductory, the reader would not be able to identify the inspiration behind “The Scarlet Letter”. Additionally, the reader would not understand the reason behind creating a story based around something as arbitrary as a red letter A. Even though this paragraph creates a basic understanding as to the origin of the scarlet letter, some information is still left out.…
Romance is an intense love that is pure and unconditional. This is shown in the romance novel All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. John Grady, the protagonist in the novel, goes on a quest for self-knowledge and along the way finds his true love, Alejandra. The series of events that follows after finding his love take him through death and sadness. To analyze this book we use Thomas C. Foster’s piece, How to Read Literature like a Professor, which provides us with direct insight on how to examine, understand and respond to a modern piece of fiction.…
The theme of “Harrison Bergeron” is forcing people to be equal is Dangerous, and the author’s use of Hyperboles and Symbolism help to develop this theme in several ways. The use Hyperboles in this text make it very iconic. One of the iconic Hyperboles in the text, is when they say “and then in, an explosion of joy and grace, into the air they sprang” this does not mean they flew. Because even for being one of the smartest people he could not really fly. The second most iconic piece of the text is when they use Symbolism.…

In the nineteenth century, women’s right in the United States had not been granted. The era saw the emergence of several prominent female literary figures. Like many other women before Glaspell, they wrote of inequality between sexes and the inability of women to live their own lives without reliance on man. Through this, they helped writers of the twentieth century, such as Glaspell, to write on similar themes. In Trifles, Glaspell's distinctive use of symbols helps illustrate the uprising theme.…
Stitching Conclusions The physical world is filled with symbols. Symbols, physical objects that represent ideas, emotions, or philosophies, are universally recognizable and important, especially in the literary tradition. Authors use symbols to rationalize the world by connecting thoughts and people; they use symbols to explain and expose the reality of the world, society, and the human condition. Yet, in many ways, the significance of symbols transcends beyond their connections to themes. People not only assign meaning to objects, they assign humanity into objects, permanently interjecting a personal part of themselves into the world.…
Even after the Civil War, in which all African-Americans no longer were deemed as slaves, the life of the black person did not get easier. For generations, the struggle to come out of impoverished lifestyles had been deemed as almost impossible. Faced by segregation, no equal rights, and the KKK, the newly freed African-Americans were not able to completely submerge themselves to “freedom”. Little by little, new opportunities emerged; however, the depths of acrimony and pain prevented blacks to completely embrace them. Those who fought for the chance to make history, emerged successful, but those who let the past hold them back, continued to live in the restrictions of the past.…
The changing of the weather, the once joyful elements of a winter now gone. As the season comes to an end, a family’s relationship begins to wither away and die as they fight for a reason that is all too real in families today. This sets the scene for Raymond Carver’s short story, “Popular Mechanics.” “Popular Mechanics” opens with the husband of the family packing his suitcase in what appears to be the aftermath of a divorce. It then spirals into a domestic dispute between the wife and mother and father over the custody of their child.…

It is part of human nature to make mistakes and sometimes learn and grow from them, or sometimes repeat them. In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the main themes of youth, new beginnings, wisdom, self image, and repetition of mistakes are exemplified through the use of symbols through the character’s perspective of themselves and their environment. The characters; Mr.Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, Mr.Gascoigne, and Widow Wycherly are prime examples of people repeating mistakes even when given a second chance to learn and progress. Hawthorne’s theme of in order to grow as a person, one must learn from mistakes and progress as a person is best shown by vivid and explicit symbols; the rose, which symbolizes acceptance of old…
In Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature like a Professor, Foster writes an entertaining guide of how to dig deeper into the metaphorical meaning of every piece of literature in hopes to inspire the minds of tomorrow not only to grow in their understanding of symbols but also to trust themselves and the knowledge they already have. In relation to Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake, Foster lends understanding to such common symbols like sex not being at all about the actual act but representing the challenge of one to change what is culturally expected of him. Foster also highlights that while the main character is usually safe from harm, the people around him are the ones that may get hurt in fault of the main character. Foster overall warns…
With very little investigation, one may think “The Lightning-Rod Man,” written in 1853 by Herman Melville, is a simple story about a man selling lightning rods who hopes people’s desire to stay safe during a storm and the closeness of the storm will help him in trying convince people to buy his product. Upon further investigation, I do not believe Melville meant for this story to just have one simple meaning. The complex style of writing leave many readers looking for more on what Melville means. In all of his works, Melville used elaborate sentences, imagery, and allusions like when talking about scripture from The Bible that help teach valuable lessons (Wikipedia, 2018).…
