Calaveras Enterprise Sports Editor Guy Dossi spoke with Bret Harte High School Athletic Director Jerry Rucker about the fall sports season. Their conversation included the success of Bret Harte volleyball, Kaela Dishion winning a cross country section championship and how he gauges what a successful season is.

GD: Do you think the fall season gets the most excitement of the three seasons? Or does the fall kind of get students excited for the rest of the year?

JR: It kind of sets the tone for the school year for spirit and things like that. So yeah, it gets it going.

GD: Football is such a big deal in high school and in 2016, Bret Harte had a really fun season. This year was a little different, with the team finishing 2-8. Does the success of a football team change the vibe among school spirit?

Volleyball was going strong, so I think that helped.

GD: Speaking of volleyball, you’ve been here for a long time and this year was the first that Bret Harte had a volleyball team reach the section championship. How big of a deal is it to the school and to the program that they were able to go so far?

JR: It’s always a big deal. It’s the first step towards hopefully what they can do in future years. It’s just something that they’ve worked for. And it is a big deal to the school. There were a few students who were able to go to the game. Unfortunately, it was on a holiday weekend, so that hurt some of the crowd. But I thought that the kids did a pretty good job getting down to the game.

GD: The girls’ golf team had another successful season. It seems like the golf team is always strong. What do you think the reason for that is?

JR: Part of it is the dedication of the coach, Rich Cathcart. But you have to have people who are dedicated to play all the time. He’s had some good players come through, so that
