WA3: Breastfeeding Should Be Accepted in Public Spaces by Everybody
Exposed breasts are present in all kind of media such as movies, magazines, and television. However, when a nursing baby is near those breasts some people become offended. Several studies prove that breastfeeding is an extremely healthy act for the mother and the baby. Despite of this, according to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “in the United States, although most mothers hope to breastfeed, and 81% of babies start out being breastfed, only 22% are exclusively breastfed 6 months later”. The Breastmilk contains antibodies that protect the child, which will have fewer

In addition, breastfeeding helps mothers to return more quickly to their normal weight. “Public breastfeeding is an act of breastfeeding a baby in public places like restaurants, bus stops, malls etc., where it may me noted and observed by the other people” (Breastfeeding in Public, par. 1). The society’s view about breastfeeding has been transforming over time. Whereas, in the nineteenth century babies were fed by their wet nurse, in the twentieth century the maternal figure was once more suitable for the function. This situation changed again in the 60s, when women joined in the job market. According to Moraes, at that time, people, including physicians, believed that industrialized milk served on bottles were more beneficial to the baby than the mother’s milk. However, this concept has changed over time. "The act of breastfeeding is always linked to something sacred, therefore must be reserved and preserved. That is why so many people are uncomfortable seeing a breastfeeding mother in public" (Moraes, 35). While criticism related to public breastfeeding persists among some people, others are encouraging women to feed their babies in the most natural way possible. Many states in the United States have specific laws stating women's right to

When babies first enter this world they are still lacking vital vitamins and nutrients they need to live and develop properly. The key to providing them with the essential nutrients they need is by breast-feeding. A mother’s milk naturally contains DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), digestive enzymes, vitamins, antibodies, hormones, and the appropriate amount of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that an infant needs to live and develop efficiently. The antibodies that breast milk contains help the infant strengthen their immune system’s response and resist certain diseases. Because of their stronger immune systems, breastfed babies get sick less often and for shorter periods.…

The breastfeeding rate in the US is too low as compared to that in India. I barely saw mothers breastfeeding their babies so far. Feeding with the formula milk is commonly seen here. After watching the video "The Milky Way", I realized that it's not wrong to breastfeed a baby in public as we all know that a baby can feel hungry at any point of time. The chapter "Birth and the New born Child" contains a section called "Nutrition: Is Breast Best?"…

To: Editorial Board of The Washington Post Too often women are faced with the cultural pressures of what constitutes a “good” mother. They may hear mantras such as “Breast is best,” or “Formula-feeding: convenient and easy.” America has been notorious for creating this false dichotomy of us vs. them or good vs. bad, and now it’s rearing its ugly head in the realm of motherhood. But one must consider: since when did a mother’s feeding preference label them as a good or bad parent?…

There is more physical contact and a more secure feeling for the mother and child. (3) Breastfeeding started a resurgence again in the late 1960s and 1970s as well and continues today. However, I think social media has more of a hand in the deciding factor to breast feed or not. More articles, are accessible through online sources, and more people, especially expectant mothers post articles about benefits and risk of breastfeeding vs bottle feeding. Breastfeeding seems to becoming a socially acceptable norm now as employers are starting to have nursing rooms for lactating mothers.…

Personally I see no issue with breastfeeding in public. I do feel it is easy to cover up your chest too though. Some may feel it is wrong to be breastfeeding a child openly in a restaurant where people are having family dinners. However, I think it is often made into a bigger deal than what it really is. Breastfeeding is a normal part of life.…

Despite the fact that breastfeeding is known to be beneficial to the health of both mother and infant alike, in North American societies the media constantly sexualises the breast, and depicts breastfeeding as indecent and inappropriate. As a result, women are incessantly being shamed for making the choice to publically breastfeed their child. It seems as though the only remedy for this societal issue is to have more positive representations of breastfeeding in the media, specifically in television. However, from public figures bashing breastfeeding, to television shows negatively portraying it for laughs, there is a lot of work that must be done for its must needed normalization. As a result of these issues, breastfeeding rates are low and…

Breastfeeding in public is one of society’s biggest controversial issues. Breastfeeding is convenient because you (as the mother) already have the natural materials to feed. The baby will decide when it’s time to eat, so feeding in public isn’t really a choice the mother has but it’s a choice the baby makes. Breastfeeding is healthier because sometimes babies will have an allergic reaction to the cow’s protein in the formula, causing discomforting symptoms. Breastfeeding in public isn’t a choice it’s a responsibility that a mother has, and she shouldn’t be put down because of it.…

Breastfeeding in America Breastfeeding in America is underutilized due to a couple complex issues, and is portrayed as having benefits over formula when every other scientific experiment compares the naturally occurring event to the manmade alteration. This being said the results should naturally state that by feeding your child formula you are putting them at a higher risk of a wide range of diseases; however the reverse is true research states that you reduce your child’s risk of developing a wide range of diseases by feeding them human milk. The first article I found is Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk, and the Second article is Barriers to Breastfeeding in the United States both article are primary sources which lends credibility…

In 1998, Elizabeth Whitaker wrote “Ancient Bodies, Modern Customs, and Our Health”. This article focuses on how culture plays a role in our health, well-being and raising our children. When going about our everyday lives, no one ever thinks about how culture plays a big part in how we raise children and how we care for our bodies. When it comes to the health of our babies and breastfeeding, I believe that it is very important. There are so many chemicals going into everything that we eat including some formulas, that breastfeeding is the way to go in our culture.…

Going out and taking care of day to day activities, such as shopping, or day to day errands would be nearly impossible if mothers were not allowed to breastfeed publically. There needs to be an increase on education on the benefits of breastfeeding, so that when mother’s breastfeed in public there will be no controversy. According to a 2004 survey though only “43 percent — of 3,719 respondents said women should have the right to breast-feed in public places” (Associated Press, 2006).…

I know as a mother there is a lot of pressure out there anymore to breastfeed your baby. There is even a campaign that is called “Breast is best”. While that is fine and dandy there is actually a learned skill to the art of breastfeeding, and the benefits that it provides. As with all parts of life it is not for everyone. I, a mother of four children can attest to this. Unfortunately, I did not breastfeed all of my children, and it wasn’t that I couldn’t it was that I too was uneducated and unaware of the benefits.…

Breast-feeding is a natural process where young infants can get their nutritional intake, which means young infants would be healthier and have a lower risk of getting infections and serious health problems. Not only does breast-feeding prevent the young infant from infections and serious health problems, it also creates an emotional bond between the mother and the young infant. Breast-feeding has benefits for both the young infant and the mother. The importance is that, through breast-feeding the young infant would receive the antibodies which are needed to fight infections in his or her early months, which are passed through the mother’s milk. The problem is that young infants who are not breast fed are likely to experience poorer health…
