Three Reasons Why You Should Breastfeed Your Baby
Breastfeeding has been around since the ancient days and it’s still widely practiced. Deciding to breastfeed is a personal choice. Some people, groups, or entities should breastfeed their baby because of these three reasons. Breastfeeding releases bonding hormones, it may lower the risk of childhood leukemia and it protects against allergies and other health problems.
The first reason why you should breastfeed your baby is because it releases bonding hormones. Breastfeeding helps the moms to bond with their babies due to a massive rush of oxytocin a.k.a the “love hormone.” The release of this hormone enhances the mothers’ feeling of trust, love, and affection. A 2007 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that the higher a mom's oxytocin levels in the first trimester of pregnancy, the more likely she was to engage in bonding behaviors such as singing to or bathing her baby. Researchers have found that babies breastfed for at least six months appear to have a 19 percent lower risk of childhood leukemia compared with babies who have never been breastfed. "Breast-feeding is a highly accessible and low-cost preventive public health measure that has been found in numerous studies to be associated not only with lower risk for childhood leukemia but also with lower risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), gastrointestinal infection, ear infection, type 2 diabetes and obesity later in life." said the study's lead author, Efrat Amitay, of the School of Public Health at the University of Haifa in Israel. He then added, “Breast milk is especially beneficial because the mother's body makes antibodies tailored to the harmful substances that the mother and baby are exposed
