Breastfeeding In Public

A current issue in the United States is that women are not allowed to openly breastfeed in public due to public humiliation and law enforcement. Women are getting arrested for doing something very natural, simply feeding their child. People who are against this action think it's public nudity, and disturbing. It’s not until recently that is “issue” has been brought to the public’s eye. Even though breastfeeding has been around since mankind. Breastfeeding is completely natural and should be allowed in public. A woman who is feeding her child, and should not be restricted to where and when they cannot feed. The mother's milk is important due to antibodies and vitamin produced by the body that help the child for the next six months. Breast milk can prevent common virus and infections. Breast milk can help protect the baby from “ear infections, upper and lower respiratory ailments, allergies, intestinal disorders, colds, viruses, staph, strep and e coli infections, diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, many childhood cancers, meningitis, and pneumonia” (La Leche League International). The baby's body is born with a very weak immune system due to these antibodies in the breast milk it is critical for the child to receive this nutrient. Also, the woman's body, when developing breast milk, creates a defense mechanism towards germs. The antibodies will eliminate the germs therefore; the milk is not contaminating with any viruses. When babies are fed formula it affects their immune system, it develops a lot slower than a baby on breast milk. Breast milk has many health benefits, but it doesn’t necessary mean the child is consistently sheltered from all illness. All babies have the chance of obtaining a virus. In Rochester, N.Y, an OB-GYN at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y claims that breast milk helps the baby from disease now and builds the immune system for the future, like chronical disease. Things such as Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, queer (LGTBQ) Community, Same sex marriage, Public Display of affection (PDA), and same sex showing PDA. The LGBTQ community was created in 1990s, therefor this movement and organization have been around for a while. Also, Same sex marriages were allowed since 2013 in thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia. These events have been happening for years now and becoming more acceptable by society and part of the social norm but some people still have major issues. How come breastfeeding in public hasn’t been acceptable or part of the social norm. Breastfeeding has been around since the being of time. Now women are being arrest, charged, and being forced to register as a pedophile. There are a lot of actions in society that people may not think are a part of the social norm, but that doesn’t make them illegal. Mothers, same sex marriage, LGTBQ should not be discriminated or harassed due to not being a someone’s right and choice. Everyone has a right to be who they want to be and their actions. People who are offended by these actions can look the other way. For example, public display of affection, like holding hands, kissing, hugging, and anything affectionate, can be appalling to some people.
