Denver School of Nursing Breastfeeding for First Time Mothers H.D. is a 30-year-old G1P1 patient here today to deliver her little girl by a vaginal delivery. She has a strong support system with her today: her husband, mother and father in law, and both of her parents. H.D. has had problems with infertility in her past; because of this she is worried about breastfeeding and milk production. H.D. is still planning on breastfeeding her baby. Based on the needs of this family, information needs about breastfeeding and proper positioning will be presented. There are four positions that are commonly used with breastfeeding mothers: “football hold, cradle, modified cradle or across the lap, and side lying” (Alden 614). When first initiating breastfeeding, mothers should use the position that is the most comfortable for them while having a good latch for the baby. Mothers should be encouraged to use pillows to help with comfort and positioning to reduce soreness and discomfort when breastfeeding. When first starting to feed the football hold is often recommended because it is the easiest position for the mother to see the baby’s mouth (Alden 615). The football hold also preferred by mothers who had a cesarean birth (Alden 615). The side lying position is good for mothers to use when they are trying to rest or when feeding in the middle of the night. The modified cradle position is good for mothers who have smaller babies (Alden 615). For babies who have learned to latch on early and are successful with feeding the cradle position is often favored (Alden 615).
