Many people may agree when saying that no one wants to be in public and see a women urinating on the street or two people having an intimate moment. People who oppose breastfeeding in public routinely compare it to sexual acts or defecation to convey the message that, while it may be natural or necessary, it should never be public (Shdaimah 412). Breastfeeding benefits infants in many ways, including providing them with important nutrients, supporting development, and limiting the occurrence and severity of illness (Holahan 1-2). Women feel hormonally inclined to feed and it resonates with their natural life style. The lack of social and economic support for maternity in the U.S. is widely acknowledged. Nursing in front of others, strangers, friends, and sometimes family, is often perceived to be embarrassing, and some women find the mere idea of breastfeeding unappealing or offending. As it is regulation to keep the place up to code there are a lot of places that fail to do so and you are bringing your child into that environment. Breast feeding may help protect the child's immune system but there is still that chance a younger child will fall ill due to a virus in the area. Many younger kids have become sick due to past illnesses such as H1N1 being the most common one. 90% of those children that died due to the H1N1 were not vaccinated against this disease (CDC 1), but we can’t always give a child a vaccination until a certain age. But on top of that a lot of parents won't vaccinate their children because they don't want them to end up with Autism or be mentally handicapped. This has become a big controversy itself among parents and although it clearly states that breastfeeding is suppose to protect child from viruses but it doesn't protect them from ones that we don't know exist.
In conclusion the need to breastfeed should be away from public eyes. Other parents don't want to have their younger children be around the sort of thing. Although it is around everywhere we go, some parents are still uncomfortable with it. Breastfeeding in public opens that child up to many viruses in the air and gives others the feeling of discomfort to be around. Although Emily locke didn't feel she was in the wrong of the public
