Breastfeeding has been done for years and years due to the necessity to feeding our infants. Originally, formula was not an option, do to it did not exist, and breastfeeding was commonplace for all women. The difference between then and now is that women are not at home all the time. Women have evolved in a way that breastfeed should now be considered commonplace, we work outside the home and go out in public all the time. There are many facts that justify breastfeeding our babies that many health professionals whole-heartedly encourage. Laws have been enacted to provide mothers the right to breastfeed in public places and for employers to provide a place for working mothers to pump. The Montana legislature passed this law, 50-19-501, because they can see the importance of this basic act of nurturing and want to protect the rights of the family. The law gives the right of the mother to breastfeed in public and it cannot be considered a nuisance, indecent, or obscene, whether the mother’s breast is covered or not (www.mtbreastfeedingcoalition.com). Breastfeeding also provides benefits to society such as it could reduce the cost of medical bills and fewer insurance claims, in addition to less time needed for time off to care for sick children. Women often feel ashamed, anxious, and rejected when breastfeeding in public, whereas bottle-feeding is more acceptable. We need to be able to justify that the feeding of our children in public is important, and the way we are doing it, by breastfeeding, is the best way. Women need to look for ways to reduce their stress with this issue and one way is by getting the message that breastfeeding is best out into the community would be a good start. If we all had the ability to accept that breastfeeding is a norm in public, we would be well on our way to
