Breastfeeding Argumentative Essay

My older daughter was formula fed. After a week of tantrums (mine and hers) and weight loss (all hers), a friend advised me that a baby needed a happy mother more than she needed to be breastfed. That made sense to me. So, I sent my husband to the store for some formula and my daughter gratefully accepted a bottle and began to eat. By the time she was three months old, I couldn't imagine anything else. I loved our life. I liked that my husband could share in the feedings. I liked that I could work one day a week and not worry about her taking a bottle...it left me plenty of time to worry about other things. I felt like I could go anywhere and feed her whenever she needed to be fed without feeling self concious. So, when I got pregnant the …show more content…
Knowing where the milk comes from, the cost, and its convenience are all factors that help moms everywhere make the choice to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is usually the most healthy option for your baby's development, too. Many mothers today continue to make the choice to feed their baby formula because they don't have anyone close to them that has breastfed. They don't know what breastfeeding entails or how to go about getting started. Understanding that breastfeeding is just as convenient - and in my opinion, more so - as giving formula can help you make the decision that best fits your lifestyle. Breast milk is always available. Unless you have supply issues, which can be corrected, breast milk is always there for your baby. One of the things that mothers wonder is whether or not they have enough milk. Breast milk is produced on demand. The more your baby drinks means the more milk your body will produce. You never have to worry about going to the store to get more milk because it will always be there when your baby needs it. One of the wonderful things that I noticed was that whenever my baby cried my milk would "come in." Breast milk is always the right temperature. Though many mothers that formula-feed say they never heat a bottle, many mothers spend a considerable amount of time warming in the microwave or under running hot water. With breast milk, the milk is body temperature and is just right for baby and their digestion. Not having to spend time warming formula will save you countless hours over your baby's first year. Scrubbing bottles? Unless you pump for "on the go feedings," you never have to wash bottles. Though I have breastfed one baby and am currently breastfeeding another, I did use formula for outings with my first child. I regret doing that now as I realize that it was actually less convenient for me to do. I probably could have saved myself a lot of time. Much of my

Many women are faced with a very important question when becoming new mothers: whether to breast-feed or formula-feed their babies. Breast feeding dates back to eighteen hundred BC in Greek culture where wet nurses came about as women hired to feed another woman’s child. Formula feeding did not come to light until two hundred years after which then led to a “refined and hygienic” bottle in the industrial ages (Stevens). While both have advantages and disadvantages, breastfeeding has shown to be more beneficial for mother and child. Although some may argue the contrary, breastfeeding is an overall better choice than formula feeding due to its health, immunity, growth, and developmental benefits, as well as convenience and price.…

I would like to summarize the entire in-class lecture you had on October 4, 2016, that was based on discussing the differences between breastfeeding and the formula. To begin with, there are a few things you should consider before you jump and decide to go right ahead and feed your baby using formula. First, let’s begin with the facts about breastfeeding.…

The milk from a bottle is actually more unsanitary than the milk from the breast. The milk straight from the source is the best way to have the least amount of harmful bacteria. It is better for baby to nurse straight from the source than from a bottle of pumped milk. (I'm not bashing bottle feeding moms, promise, just arguing the point that many are making about breasts being disgusting.)…

YOUR INFANT’S NOURISHMENT One of the most challenging and personal decisions about becoming a first time mother is deciding the right nourishment for your baby. Many mothers decide whether they plan to breastfeed or formula feed their infant before labor, but often change their mind after delivery. For instance, some mothers choose to breastfeed not only for the child’s health benefit, but also to foster a sense of security in the child through body contact and communication.2 Alternatively, some mothers choose to formula feed when they experience difficulties in latching the child to their breast for feeding, for access to readily available food, or because of the financial need to return to work sooner than expected.2 Whatever the reason, society should be supportive of the autonomy of mothers to make their own reproductive…

For most moms, just before the birth of our children, we are faced with the major dilemma of to nurse or not to nurse. Breastfeeding is an individual choice and one that should be made prior to the arrival of your baby, if at all possible. If you decide beforehand, you can prepare yourself for all of the rebuttals you will need that will attempt to dissuade you from one of the most beautiful perks of motherhood - breastfeeding. I chose to nurse for various reasons, but at the top of the list were: economics, emotional bonding, and convenience. It was not easy to do, however, and if a very close friend hadn't warned me, I may have been very tempted to give up after the first few tries with my daughter.…

Although formula for infants has been highly formulated, breastfeeding is the best option for both the infant and the mother. Breast milk has the correct proportions of macronutrients (lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and trace elements) that allow for the development of the infant.3 The nutrients in breast milk are easier to digest than in formula.4 Breast milk allows the infant to adjust to it as it grows, first with the colostrum. Colostrum is produced during the first couple of days of breastfeeding. It is rich in immunoglobulins, antimicrobial factors and growth factors.5 Colostrum is not in formula, so it will not be received by the formula-fed infant.…

It is important not to prop your baby’s bottle and to hold them close, allowing mother and child to develop a loving bond while feeding. Formula feeding can be very convenient, and flexible for mother and baby. A formula-fed baby can be fed by anyone at anytime, which can also make for more bonding time between other loved ones while giving the mother a well deserved break.
