Breastfeeding has many benefits; nutrients, protection from infection, and helps with the development of the immune and digestive systems . This allows for a healthier infant compared to a formula-fed infant. 1 Breastfeeding reduces health problems, allows for healthier nutritional value, is a lower cost, and more convenient. Not only is breastfeeding beneficial for the newborn, but also the mother. Breastfeeding supports a healthier recovery and reduces the risk of developing some diseases.2 Although formula for infants has been highly formulated, breastfeeding is the best option for both the infant and the mother. Breast milk has the correct proportions of macronutrients (lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and trace elements) that allow for the development of the infant.3 The nutrients in breast milk are easier to digest than in formula.4 Breast milk allows the infant to adjust to it as it grows, first with the colostrum. Colostrum is produced during the first couple of days of breastfeeding. It is rich in immunoglobulins, antimicrobial factors and growth factors.5 Colostrum is not in formula, so it will not be received by the formula-fed infant. Infant formula has many challenges to it. First, water needs to sterilized. The water needs to be prepared the right way or the infant can experience health problems due to contamination. These bacteria are less harmful in adults, but because of the infantile immune system bottle fed infants can become ill. Second, equipment and formula need to be taken care of properly. All equipment needs to be sterilized, which can be time consuming. Formula, needs to be stored correctly and consumed withing a time range to prevent growth of unhealthy bacteria.
