In today’s day and age, plastic surgery is extremely popular, especially breast augmentations. About 4% of women in America get breast augmentation each year. One of the options for breast augmentation is silicon implants. That being said I wanted to learn more about silicon and what people are putting in their bodies. Silicon is an element a pure substance that can’t be broken down. Silicon was first discovered in 1824 by a Swedish chemist named Jons Jacob Berzelius. This element is the second most abundant and it makes up about 27.7% of the earth’s crust. Although silicon is the second most abundant element, and it can’t be found free in nature. Silicon is usually found as silica or silicates. In order to obtain silicon by itself sand or carbon needs to be heated. In the next paragraphs, I will be discussing the physical appearance of silicon, chemical formula, molar mass, and Lewis structure.

It helps with many things such as making concrete and cement. It helps with making engine blocks and machine tools. It’s also used to make silicone oil, which is used in hair products and cosmetics. Likewise, Silicon also makes Silicone rubber used as a sealant, this is seen around the windows, bathrooms, pipes, and roofs. In addition Silicon is also a semi conductor for many high tech items. As the temperature increases silicon conducts electricity used in computer chips, iPhones, and iPods. Besides all these great tools silicon is also being used for breast augmentation.
