There are all sorts of different cancers that people tend to hear of. Cancer is abnormal cells that grow out of control and invade a healthy person’s body. When these cells do not grow normally things can go wrong. When cancer occurs it is because the cells divide more than they should and begin to form masses also known as tumors. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the most common type of cancer is breast cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death in woman. Breast cancer is when the malignant cells form in the tissue of the breast. In 2016, an estimated 246,660 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 40,450 deaths (KOMEN). In rare cases, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in a 1,000 men will ever be diagnosed with breast cancer (NBCF).
Risk Factors
Research has not found a specific cause of breast cancer. There are risk factors that cannot be changed like age, genetics, and being a woman. Being a woman is the biggest risk factor for developing breast cancer (BCO). Woman are more prone to being diagnosed because breast development takes 3 to 4 years and is complete by the age of 14 and most of the male breasts you see are fat, not fully formed glands (BCO). Once fully formed, breast cells are still very immature. During the immaturity stage the breast cells are extra responsive to estrogen and hormone disrupters in the environment while most men have extremely low levels of estrogen (BCO). Another risk…
