It is not known exactly what causes breast cancer, however “It is estimated that in 2015 there will be 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer, 62,290 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the breast will be found (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer), and about 40,290 deaths from breast cancer.” (The American Cancer Society 2014, September 9). Other than skin cancer and second only to lung cancer, breast cancer is the leading death among women in the United States. While it isn’t known what causes breast cancer there is some thought that certain risk factors may aid in the cause such as gender, aging, lifestyle, smoking, drinking, and diet. Having risk factors does not mean someone will get breast cancer, nor not having any risk factors means a women is safe from getting breast cancer. Although most all breast cancer are found in women, there is a percentage of men who develop breast cancer. “The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2015 are: About 2,350 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. About 440 men will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.
