After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. It can occur in both men and women, but it is extremely more common in women. “Each year there are about 2,300 new cases of breast cancer in men and about 230,000 new cases in women” (National Cancer Institution, 2016). Breast cancer survival rates have increased, which is largely due to earlier detection, a new personalized treatment for patients, and a better understanding of the disease.
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. People with breast cancer often suffer from extreme fatigue and a lack of energy. They may also suffer from nausea, a lack of appetite, and may have sudden and unexplained weight loss. A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancerous, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. They can even be painful. Some signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include abreast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue, bloody discharge from the nipple, change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast, changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling, a newly inverted nipple, peeling of the pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple or breast skin and redness of the skin over the breast.
