There are all sorts of different cancers that people tend to hear of. Cancer is abnormal cells that grow out of control and invade a healthy person’s body. When these cells do not grow normally things can go wrong. When cancer occurs it is because the cells divide more than they should and begin to form masses also known as tumors. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the most common type of cancer is breast cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death in woman. Breast cancer is when the malignant cells form in the tissue of the breast. In 2016, an estimated 246,660 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 40,450 deaths (KOMEN). There is In Situ, invasive, and inflammatory. Almost 95% are cancer tumors that develop in the milk ducts. Those cancers stay inside the ducts without spreading out and are known as in situ cancers. It is also known to be called pre-cancer because a woman cannot die from Ductal Carcinoma in Situ unless it is left untreated and turns into invasive breast cancer (BOOK). About 1 in 5 new breast cancer cases will be Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. Almost all women diagnosed at this early stage of breast cancer can be cured (Cancerorg). The types of imaging used is a mammography, ultrasonography and breast magnetic resonance imaging (UCSF). A mammography is the best test to screen for breast cancer (UCSF). Women who do not have symptoms should have a screening by the time they are 40 years old. If the woman is at higher risk they would start the screenings at an earlier age. A screening mammogram takes pictures from two different views. The breast is compressed from the top to bottom and from side to side. This kind of imaging can detect a lump before it is even palpable (BOOK). If a woman was to be concerned about radiation exposure letting her know that the exposure is the same as being out in the sun for 1 hour (BOOK). Making sure she is aware that she would need to have many mammograms in a year to be at risk for cancer. During a mammogram the woman may feel discomfort due to the breasts being compressed in order to spread the tissue and get a good picture. The compression only lasts a few seconds. The con about a mammogram is it does not show whether the lump is cancerous or not, only biopsies
