In “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity” by Jim Mccormick, the biggest risk-taking in the story is the initial act of skydiving. The next big risk in that story is the act of releasing one parachute for another. As said in paragraph 14 we see that ”The wrong order could cause my reserve parachute to deploy into my spinning main parachute which would result in an incurable entanglement” which makes the risk of making a bad mistake very costly; death. In the other story “Neighbours” by Lien Chao, there isn’t a significant amount of the typical risk-taking. Sally does take risks in making new friends with Joe and Elizabeth and telling them her life story. In paragraph 38, Joe sparks an interesting debate “But what about their mothers?’ Joe adds, “do they know it’s their responsibility to educate their kids?” Sally is then faced with a dilemma; does she risk her friendship to stand up for single mothers? Or does she let that comment slide? Sally decides to take a risk and stand up for single mothers. Much to her surprise, she actually benefits from her risk-taking. Personally, “Neighbours” is a story that demonstrates a greater benefit from taking risks than “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity” does. Although the skydiver might die, there really isn’t any “risks” that he has to overcome or commit to. This mentality is shown in both the short story “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity” by Jim McCormick, although one might say that the short story “Neighbours” by Lien Chao, actually shows the greater benefit from taking risks. Sally, the protagonist in “Neighbours,” puts her friendship on the line, in order to stand up for someone. In “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity,” the skydiver, has to try and figure out how to save himself, and the only way to do so is also going to put his life at risk.
