The one breaking the rules, always gets the advantage. Equality is an inhabitant of a corrupt society, where Council has taken away any bit of power to the civilians. In the Council’s perfect society all citizens are equal, but to an extreme. All must love, respect, and value others the same. There is no marriage, family, or friendship and Council intends on keeping it that way. Equality is one of the outliers who intend on breaking these rules, because he does not understand why the society is the way it is. He cannot explain his feeling of missing something, and the readers know he is thinking of the other accepts of society. The civilians of Anthem’s society think the rules had no purpose, except to simply be there. Although, the true reason Council has written the rules is to retain their position on top. If there wasn’t an excessive amount of rules, the citizens could start a revolution taking over the society. The Council has worked for years on perfecting their society. A lack of rules could risk what they have accomplished. In addition to this, the rules are used to make citizens maintain their role in society. Anthem’s society is based around everyone treating others equally. In the community, you must do your job for your brothers yet not for one peer more than another. In Anthem, he escapes the wretched society and finds a home elsewhere. He decides he wants to return to the society and save more people. Equality could start a revolution and possibly create a new society. Multiple believe he would not obtain nearly as many rules as his past society. According to Anthem, Equality wept when he found out there was a better way to society. He mentally couldn’t believe that the Council had hid so many things from them and preferred it much more if it was a society like today's. Several readers of Ayn Rand’s Anthem believe that Equality would create a society including love, freedom, morals, many emotions, and aspects of life that his past society was missing.
