Song Analysis Assignment

Generation Y or the Millennial Generation is known for being more narcissistic, addicted to technology and love to be in the spotlight more than previous. While these may be some negative generalizations, two key characteristics that are beneficial are becoming more self-aware about messages through the media and becoming more open minded. We are still very harsh on ourselves and on others, and standards for girls are still outlandish because of the media. In my personal opinion, the millennial generation, otherwise known as generation Y, is defined by many of the popular pop songs. There are other songs that become quietly popular and oftentimes listeners don’t

Many of the older generations view Generation Y to be overly obsessed with technology, but this is also because the older generations did not grow up with this technology and may not know how to use it. In contrast, the Millennials are using technology to their advantage. It has played an important role in how open minded this generation is, especially in regards to gender equity. Social media platforms like Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are now used to raise awareness about issues that people of this generation believe in. I personally see posts on tumblr quite often promoting self-love and accepting the differences one has, often in females but sometimes both genders. This relates directly to the song where she has written: “Why should you care, what they think of you/When you’re all alone, by yourself/Do you like you?” This generation is promoting the idea of being independent and staying true to …show more content…
It is now a common belief that societal norms may still hold us back, but it is now acceptable to break away and be unique. In the last verse she sings: “Take your makeup off/Let your hair down/Take a breath/Look into the mirror/ Do you like you? /Cause I like you.” A wave of liberal feminism has swept through this generation, and it has been a huge step forwards towards empowering women. While there are some who are still against this movement or believe radically that women are much better than men, the majority have shown some form of support towards changing gender expectations. Generation Y is a generation that is paving the pathway towards truly combatting social justice issues. The improvements the Millenials have made for female empowerment, gender equity and the idea of self-love are why I believe the song Try by Colbie Caillat embodies Generation

Through the ages, society has evolved. Technology advances, jobs evolve even parenting styles adapt and evolve over the years. Change is hard to see in small measures, however, over time one can see big differences. In the Depression era, parenting styles were more authoritative. In “The Beat Up Generation” (2014), written by Abby Ellin, she defines the Millenials as a generation that is spoiled, self-entitled and technology controlled. Despite the negative representation of Millenials, Ellin praises them for being hardworking, technology innovating and outspoken. Ellin offends Generation Y being viewed as lazy and having no motivation to work in order to further claim her purpose and because this was written for Psychology Today and published, her intended audience was for the general public who were most likely to be curious or knowledgeable about the Millenials. I wasn’t very shocked or angry of what Ellin wrote about Millenials since it was all true. Sure, we do come across as lazy, technology obsessed or as we have been named as “heads down generation” meaning we always have our head down looking into our phones but that is because of our generation like many generations before us, is flawed.…

Many people find themselves misinformed regarding what exactly happened to the hippies of the late 60’s and 70’s. The belief that the psyconautical, tie-dye sporting, van-driving, happy-go-lucky counterculture has hence been disbanded is a common misconception. All that has occurred is the divergent evolution of a community. More clearly, for the predecessor breed, some did stay loyal to the soft, spacey, feel-good rock of the era like “The Grateful Dead,” and Jimi Hendrix.…

Self-obsessed, beautiful, the best. These are some of the words that comes to mind when we think about todays generation, Generation Z or the name that is being used more frequently Generation ME. However this is just a depiction presented to us by the media, who choose to blatantly ignore our more redeeming aspects in an unfair manor displaying us as a lost cause. Media would generally have you believe that our generation are a bunch of narcissistic dead beats, when in reality we’re the ones fighting for our future, the ones promoting self love, acceptance and differences in a society that thrives off making us the same, and lives off our self-loathing. Films such as mean girls perfectly displays how our generation is displayed through film…

In today’s progressive world, the millennial generation has been known to push back on traditional societal norms. Teenagers today live in a completely altered world compared to their parents’ adolescence. Previous generations did not explore the uncharted waters of gender conformity as much as the youth in 2017. There is certainly more to a person than what he or she posts on social media, but this online world with a plethora of sites and profiles has exposed the younger generations to a new way to find their identity. Modern technology has offered more exposure to diversity than whatever dial-up internet access could offer in in 1980’s.…

In the text of the song, Thicke is making the argument that women need to be domesticated to protect themselves from their fragile, dumb, animalistic nature, yet this music video only seems to provide evidence that it is actually the men who have much to learn in order to prevent their animalistic nature from taking over as it does in the music video in the form of a predator versus prey scenario. These older, financially stable men are seen preying on these innocent, child-like women who supposedly can’t care for themselves which supports the notion that the men are actually the problem and they should be kept far away from any woman rather than being the dominant protector like Thicke is attempting to convey they should. Unfortunately, though, the popularity of the song itself and the video proves that Thicke’s perception on gender roles is one that is supported by many people. The notion of men as the protectors of women has been present for a good portion of history, but with feminist movements becoming more and more present and talked about it is sad to see the big players in pop music, such as Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I., supporting the domestication of women which thus supports the loss of women’s rights. When young, impressionable girls and boys heard this song on the radio or…

Lady Gaga sings about loving yourself regardless of your differences of sex, race, or gender. Although I do not particularly like the song melody, the lyrics hold true importance and should be understood by everyone everywhere. Ignorance is still greatly prevalent in the world and may never even be stopped. However, through outlets of music and respected artists such as Lady Gaga, we may achieve world harmony one day if the message is spread. She also encourages her audience to look past their disabilities and be brave during hardships of bullying or teasing.…

Millennials and Alienation can be some kind of trend nowadays. There is no doubt that Millennials are living in capitalistic society, hence resulting to the idea that perhaps alienation exists in this generation. One can form the idea that even in modern society there is still those who belong to the bourgeois and the proletariat. The rampant manifestation of narcissism and individualism gives the question of how Millennials tend to be alienated (in terms of what alienation do Millennials experience) depth in contrast to the basic statement: Millennials are alienated, because the experience of alienation is something that is felt socially and not individually. However, despite the close interrelation between Millennials and Alienation, it is necessary for one to go through the depth of the millennials’ experience of alienation.…

In Beyoncé performances and lyrics on stage, she always makes a visual and speaks on how it's important to be an individual, your own independent person that is powerful. Although, if women were to be more prominent in the world, life, family and work priories will crash fiercely. As long as women are bearing the children in our species, women will not view child rearing and child care in the same way as men do, and will prioritize the responsibilities around it differently. Beyoncé sings in harmony about how women run the world, but why don't we actually run it, women are capable of so many astonishing accomplishments, but they're all hidden by the shadow of a man. Women deserve to be prominent in the world we now live if it’s what they desire for; it shouldn’t be that hard to treat women…
