I have undertaken the task of breaking a social norm within the my house. As stated in the book, “Informal norms-unwritten standards of behavior understood by people who share a common identity” (Kendall, 76). I wanted to see my family’s reaction when I styled half of my hair and didn’t do the other side. I received negative sanctions because the reactions of my family reacting to my different hair styles. Normally on a regular day, people either take the time to style their hair or not to style their hair. It’s normally not half done. For example, individuals are accustomed to everyone having their hair one certain way the whole head, not different like the experiment I conducted. So when someone does something different than everyone is used to, their internal reactions change. Anyways, I was getting ready for my day, upstairs in the bathroom and since my hair is naturally curly/frizzy; I straightened the left side of my hair and put a cute twist in the top of it, to hold my bangs back and the right side of my hair I left to be natural which is generally poofy and frizzy. Everyone was home at the time, which is 5 people. So I was intending on getting 5 different reactions. I go into my step-sister’s room and she is watching Netflix, I go to lay down with her and then I ask if she wants to grab lunch with me. She was like “Yeah let me get ready, are you done in the bathroom?” I said yes, I’m ready whenever you are. Her name is Carli, and she just looked at me.. and asked again to see if i was honestly done getting ready? I said yes, why wouldn’t I be? Her reaction was all within her facial expressions. Her eyes got wide, stared at me for a second or two and looked shocked by also rolling her eyes. As she was getting ready I went down the stairs into the living room and saw my dad. His personality is always making jokes out of situations, so he just simply asked and chuckled, “Honey, did you stick your finger in the light socket this morning?” I laughed and said No, I wouldn 't do that! Then he just continued by saying a little sarcasm and saying I looked good. I went into the kitchen and Chris, my step-mom and my boyfriend ,Jordan were in there. Chris always has a positive outlook on situations, so she saw my hair tried to make a joke and said “That 's the way we wore our hair in the 80’s, well on the right side of your head, HAHA.” She was talking about the side of the hair I didn’t style. My boyfriend was trying to interrupt Chris but he was asking if I ran out of time to do my hair. I replied by saying, no I want to wear my hair with this hair
