If you are one of the most avid fans of football, you might find it too common to see your favorite football players suffer foot injuries that will inhibit them to play for a part - or even the whole - of the football season. Let us take the case of Ben Roethlisberger for example. Being the Steelers' star quarterback, he should be formidable, right? However, that is not the case as Roethlisberger suffered a major injury last year known as the Lisfranc injury.…
Everything can change in the blink of an eye. That’s what happened to football player, Eric LeGrand. In the blink of an eye, he was no longer able to move any muscle below his neck. When he went in for a tackle on Michael Brown, his head collided with Brown’s left shoulder, causing him to fracture his C3 and C5 vertebrae. Consequently, LeGrand became paralyzed and lost all feeling below his neck.…
POP! Your ACL just snaps in half. The pain is unbearable. It feels like your knee is just hanging because nothing is holding the back part of your knee together. You are scared to get the MRI results back because it is a huge setback.…
This story begins on a hot, summer Sunday on a neighborhood playground in Ponte Vedra Beach Florida when I was a kindergartener. The playground had one item that I liked the most which was a thing that you would hold onto then someone would push you across ten feet while your feet were hanging down. My dad came up to push me and might have pushed me a little too hard. When I got to the end of the line there was a rubber block that stops you very abruptly. Due to inertia, I was flung off of the handle over the rail, then did some crazy acrobatics in the air, Finally I landed right on top of my left wrist.…

By weight training the muscles in the body, these muscles can become stronger which can make them less vulnerable to injuries. Also, training athletes in specific skills can help them avoid these injuries.…
Crushing Skulls Every year, more and more parents across the United States are pulling their kids out of their local football program. Many parents are simply not allowing their children to even start playing competitive football. They believe that the sport of football is too dangerous for their kids to play in. They think that football is simply not a safe enough sport to play due to the risk of injuries kids have by simply tackling another person. Football is arguably America’s most popular sport, and the general public typically hasn’t had an issue with its safety in the past (Lupton).…
I experienced failure last year during my cross country season. It was my first year of cross country and my coaches thought that I was going to be able to get a 5k time in the nineteens by the end of the season. I thought that I would be able to get or at least come close to that time. This was not the case though, I suffered from a burnout and formed a stress fracture soon after. Finding out that I had a stress fracture was heartbreaking.…
Taking into account Creighton University’s dedication to a diverse educational community, I consider myself a student with varying talents, abilities, experiences, opinions, and backgrounds. One aspect of my life that separates me from others is my involvement in collegiate athletics. I competed in wrestling at both the Division I and Division III levels. Through wrestling, I have obtained a large amount of experience that will help me in physical therapy school. One of the greatest American wrestlers and coaches of all time, Dan Gable, once said, “Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”…
One time I showed grit during my football game. It was during 7th grade and I can’t quite remember who we were playing, but I do know we were winning. It was fourth down and we were going to punt the ball but our coach told us to do a fake punt. When the ball was snapped Jack grabbed the ball and started sprinting my way. I was blocking my guy and the next thing I know I was clabbered.…
As Angela Duckworth said in Corey Donahue’s essay, “‘Grit is not just about perseverance over time, but also passion over time.’ Thankfully, grit scores are malleable: they can and do change over time.” grit and ultimately their success in school.” There are some people that may succeed the first time but most will not, and being taught grit, and learning that they should push through and give your everything to you schooling and your life to succeed can make a huge difference through your high school…
I heard it for the first time in the short video I watched, “Angela Lee Duckworth: The key to success? Grit”. Every culture has its own special ways to encourage the individual how to be a determined and not to give up when facing a hardship, and this short video is talking about the same thing. So, I searched the word GRIT in the internet. I found that, for years, many researchers had spent a great deal of their life researching and discussing this concept, GRIT.…
- Personal Statement For as long as I can remember I have always loved sports. Most children are naturally playful, but for me, my desire to be active stretched well pass my childhood years. In elementary school I was a part of a little league baseball team, in middle school I ran track, and in high school I became an even more diverse athlete by joining the baseball, basketball, and soccer teams. It was during that time when I realized my passion for sports medicine.…
For example, if one did fail on a test, they would not try to study harder, in fact they would just rub it off their shoulders like it was no big deal. Douglas shows many examples of these through his journey of learning to read and write. “The Significance of Grit”, by Deborah Perkins-Gough, talks about these mindsets and how these can affects one’s learning abilities. Angela Lee, the person who made the case study, says that, “The attitude “I can get better if I try harder" should help make you a tenacious, determined, hard-working person.”…
