In our society, there are unwritten social norms that people tend to follow. These social norms are sort a like guideline rules on what is appropriate and what is not appropriate and also how someone’s behavior is like in different types of situations. For an example, it is an acceptable norm to leave a tip of at least fifteen percent when you’re done eating at a restaurant. However, if you choose to not leave a tip that would be considered a violation of the norm but it will not earn you a spot in the jail cell. At most this would make you come off as a rude. In this paper, I will be discussing how and what norm I decided to break and also the people’s responses to me breaking them.
When you’re shopping it is considered appropriate to not leave your cart in the middle of the isle while blocking the traffic on incoming shoppers trying to shop. I decided to break this norm. In this day and time hardly anyone just walks up to total strangers and rant about their life stories. Now, I am not comfortable with strangers knowing my life when I do not know them but I decided to take the risk and break it! I just recently moved into an apartment complex so I do not know anyone here. So one night, I decided to take my dog out for a walk and every person I saw I walked right up to them and ranted about my life. The responses I got was, this one couple just ignored me and walked away. This group of drunken college students just looked at me like I was crazy and then paid attention to my dog and then walked away. This group of older adults and young boy just listened to me rant and then we just chatted about our life. And then, Two male buddies asked if I wanted a drink and to see if I was okay.
