Over the course of the season, Jesse and Walt build up a mentor and mentee relationship. Walt becomes a father figure to Jesse, after his last one abandoned him. When Walt first proposes to cook meth, the opportunity came for an authority figure of Jesse’s past to share an interest with him opens up. At first Jesse is closed off to Walt, as he is afraid of being turned in, and, more importantly, getting too close before being closed off. After Walt starts showing dedication to cooking the meth, Jesse’s attitude towards Walt changes. Jesse starts off only showing slight difference to Walt. When he originally goes to the store to pick up the materials needed to dispose of Crazy 8 and Emilio, he only acquires the hydrofluoric acid. He does not get the plastic bins because he still does not fully trust Walt, and thinks that he knows a better way. Later, when he tries to use the bathtub to dispose of the body though, he was proven wrong, as the hydrofluoric acid eats the porcelain. In the meantime Jesse attempts to cook meth on his own, with help from his friend Badger. Jesse, having already accepted Walt’s guidance, takes Walt’s standards of purity upon himself, showing his dedication to the relationship between him and Walt. His subsequent failures lead him to throw out the batches and get frustrated with himself for not being able to meet Walt’s standards. When Walt offers to join back in business, Jesse is fully dedicated to him. Jesse embraces the new relationship he has with Walt. When he finds out that Walt has cancer, Jesse helpfully offers the advice to Walt to “put an icepack on your head during chemo.” Jesse now cares for Walt and his comfort. Later Jesse agrees to go to Tuco, the new drug king of the area, to try to sell the meth in bulk to him. Jesse is now willing to do dangerous things for Walt that he likely would not do even for himself. When Jesse is hurt and Walt enacts vengeance for him, Jesse finds himself under the protection of Walt. Finally Jesse has found someone to take the place of the family that he had
