Personal Narrative: Breaking A Gender Norm

Improved Essays
Last weekend my brother and his friends decided to have a small gathering, a so called kickback. It was going to take place in the backyard of my boyfriend’s house. His backyard is spacious and closed off from the rest of the property. There was a keg, tables set up for beer pong, and chairs for people to sit. It was a small gathering, close friends and friends of friends only. The crowd was mixed with both males and females. I was going to behave like one of the boys tonight. I invited Jasmine, one of my friends so that she can be my observer. The norm that I decided to break was to partake in drinking that males normally do, i.e. beer pong and a keg stand. I consider this breaking a gender norm because it is a competition between the males. …show more content…
It takes a lot of courage to go up to a group of people, let alone a group of guys as a female. I had to assert myself into their plans which I was ignored. I felt nervous become I knew it was going to backlash on me as well, I knew people would talk about my behavior. I felt awkward, when I went back to sit because chit chit kind of stopped. Having unequal teams (males’ vs females) gave our table much more attention than two male teams or two female teams playing together. Having extra eyes on me put pressure on Jasmine and I to prove ourselves that we can be one of the boys too. Plus, the males we were playing against would make snarky comments to distract us, when they clearly did not do that when playing against males. The sanctions mainly came from others, looks that were given to me, comments that were said. I had to “control” myself. I felt a little ashamed, only because my boyfriend was one of the males who gave me an odd look of disapproval. At the end of the night, the sanctions of others were what controlled me. I did not want to behave in that manner, although it was fun to prove myself to the boys, no one else seemed to appreciate that behavior or congratulate me for winning against the males. But they way women are socialized also played a huge role. Woman should just sit and look pretty and I clearly did not obey that which lead to stares and snarky comments by both males and females. One concept is the socialization of gender. There are gender differences in the way people interact. Status determines who may interact with whom and how to respond to people. There are set practices, actions and modes of interaction that mark gender differences. As stated by Sapiro, “many of them are markers that typically flow from the way status differences are expressed in a given society. Men are expected to be dominant in social interaction” (86). I was in the mists of it all. I did not follow this gender norm since I approached a male dominated circle. It was shocking for the males and for me to have actually done so. I even noticed how everyone divided upon themselves. All the females were in the same general area isolated from the males, sitting in their own individual groups. While the males were standing around by the tables and drinks. Since childhood boys and girls are taught these differences and it carries out until adulthood. These ideas are so strong that they have been carried from one generation to the next, years after years. This assignment clarified the perseverance of the gender norms that society has set upon

The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

My senior year of softball was ending; towards the end of the season nominations for homecoming court were due. Out of the four seniors my team nominated me with a football boy to represent softball. The pep rally assembly is a time to showcase a special handshake and to practice for homecoming court in front of the student body. We spent many hours practicing our handshake. In the handshake was a mock lightsaber battle, me standing on top of him as if he was a surfboard, leapfrogging off one another, and pretending to slap him in the face.…

Since I was a little girl I’ve always liked sports, I like to run, sweat and have physical activities outdoors. I remember when I was in 5th grade, after school many students will play different sports, I really liked basketball and saw some boys in the afternoon playing. I stared at the boys playing for a while, they were having so much fun. They had two teams, I approached and asked them if I could play in one of the teams, they all stared at me for a minute like if I was a crazy person. One of the boys, apparently the leader of the group told me that they had a “No Girls Allowed” rule and walked away without even letting me say a word.…

Allow me to set the scene to illustrate how this night (and most nights in general) of BASIC small group nights began. The clock read 7:35 as I exited the TIC Room. I had texted my small group girls to meet at my apartment at 7:44. It takes approximately nine minutes for me to drive from New Life to my apartment. Additionally, I had told one of my girls that I would pick her up on my way there.…

I envisioned a ranch with endless acres of apple trees blooming, a quaint house near the back with various farm animals roaming around, a Father and Mother watching their children play amongst each other on a sunny spring afternoon. I’ve seen this farm in person, it’s now commercialized for the local sale of apples from the trees that still reside to this day. The sole structure of the old modest adobe home still stands, no roof, just the greenery that’s surrounded and grown throughout the home over the decades. Despite the fact that I’ve only been alive to see this land commercialized and the adobe house abandoned, my visits during apple picking season as a young girl lead my imagination to invent a childhood I assumed my grandmother lived.…

Judith Lorber (1994) describes gender as a type of institution that has established patterns of expectations for individuals based on whether they are male or female. She believes that gender affects individuals and their social interaction, gender is traceable, can be researched and examined. Gender establishes a set of expectations for us to follow and has a huge impact on social processes and its organization. This institution is purely based on a set of learned ideas that have shaped the way our society thinks and has nothing to do with our actual biology.…

I never had to think about being a woman, only at times did I ask myself why was I born a woman. Have you ever noticed that alarm clocks never come with the option of sirens for your daily wake-up call? Perhaps this is for good reason - I do not recommend it to anyone on any occasion. On November 1st, 2003, I was abruptly awakened by the horrifying sound of sirens, a sound that did nothing but put a deep pit in my stomach as I crawled out of bed that Saturday morning. In a panic, my mom quickly grabbed my brother and me and rushed us to our neighbor’s house. We spent the next few hours playing in their basement the way a six and an eight year old always tend to do.…
