Break On The Clarinet

"The only thing keeping you from your goal is the *bleep* story you keep telling yourself as to why you can't achieve it.” I had been playing the clarinet since fifth grade. I thought I was a very proficient musician and I was the best clarinetist ever. My confidence in my playing was very high. One can say “I was arrogant when it came to my instrument”.
My sophomore year a potential new band director was visiting my school. On the day he arrived, my curiosity had the best of me and I hastened to the band room. The congenial person that I am, I went over to him and we chatted a little while. As we were talking he asked me “where is the break on the clarinet?” It felt like he was speaking another language and he had seen the look on my face, bemusement is the only way I can describe how I looked. After that he said “Son, you’re not as good as you think you are” and from that point, I began to dislike him. Now of course later that day I went and found out what the break was and as a typical high school student would say, “I knew what that was.”

Before the school year started, we had band camp. During band camp, he had given me and the rest of the student's scales and exercises to play through. On the scale paper, it had notes in what is called the “altissimo register.” Previous before him giving us the scales I had never even attempted to play a note that was so high. So, me being the determined person that I am, I challenged myself and attempted to play one of the scales. Starting with “b flat 1”. In the altissimo register “b flat 1” consists of the d note. There I was making my way up to that note. I’m there now *SQUEAK*… I got to that note and made the most obnoxious sound ever. I was utterly appalled by that sound. Based on what “non-musicians” said I thought I was the best and could do

“We’ve never lost an American in space and we’re sure as hell not gonna lose one on my watch! Failure is not an option!” Said by Gene Kranz on the movi Apollo 13, the ‘Failure is not an option’ phrase has been used by various action movies as a cliché which shows authority and badassery. Every character on this kind of movie says that failing on their specific job (or mission, if you really want to be that badass) is not what they are expecting. Fail this mission and you don’t exist on our lives, that’s it.…

I remember my 10 year old self sitting in the stands at the very first Roosevelt Rough Rider football game of the 2007-2008 season, and half-time had just began. My sister was in the marching band so I sat there scanning the field for her, but couldn’t find her. I stood up and looked one more time until I saw her, standing tall on top of the drum major podium, calling the band to attention and putting her hands in position to begin conducting the band. I watched her, in awe of how her hands moved as they hit every beat, giving the band the tempo to the music.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. Odysseus may be a hero, but he still exemplifies many Greek vices as well. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and Odysseus clearly crosses that line. The difference between confidence and arrogance may not always be clear, but it is still there. A confident person can see others’ skills as well, while an arrogant person can only see their own.…

so I then decided to give up. The next concert I had to play the snare for Alpine Adventure, but I asked Mr Zielinski if I did not have to and he said that he would let me pass for this time. The rest of the year I did not play the snare drum because I was so embarrassed that I would not even want to touch it like it was poisonous. I kept getting judged by the boys who also played percussion they all would not believe that I could not play the snare drum and how I could never ever touch…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

The lowest point of my high school career was the winter of my freshman year. I was the only underclassman that had made the varsity cheerleading squad and that automatically made me an outsider and the upperclassmen made sure I knew that. I was constantly the target of their aggression, even though I never did anything to deserve it. Being powerless in this cheer tyranny, I was forced to silently suffer until I could no longer handle it. One day at practice, I exploded; my mouth was the volcano and my rage was the lava.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…
