Double Standard in Social Judgements of Gender Norm Violators
In 2012, Ruth Gaunt studied 311 male and female participants’ reactions and opinions on gender roles and norm violators. The participants evaluated both male and female breadwinner and caregiver roles, and their responses were recorded using several methods of attribution. Gaunt hypothesizes that both traditional and egalitarian participants will hold double standards in their views of gender norm violators, with traditional participants favoring the caregiving mother and breadwinning father combination, while the egalitarian participants favor the caregiving father and breadwinning mother.

Eve in 2012, 83 male students from the University of Grenada participated in a study conducted by M. Carmen Herrera, Francisca Expósito, and Miguel Moya. The goal of the study was to examine how males react to losing power or authority in situations with females, incorporating hostile and benevolent sexist ideology.
Participants were given various situations in which they were asked to make a decision, and their female counterpart would either accept or not accept the decision. Herrera et al developed three hypotheses. First, that the woman that does not agree with or accept the decisions of the man will be perceived as a greater threat and will receive more negative reactions and be viewed more negatively that the woman that agrees and accepts the man’s decision. Second, that if the man is more hostile, the more likely he will be to perceive the woman that does not accept his decision as a threat, and the more likely he will have a negative reaction and assessment of the woman.
