Breaching Experiment

For my second breaching experiment I attempted to complete the “What are you wearing experiment”. A few of my friends and I decided to dress up in the classic 80s work out gear. We found some neon leggings, leotards, scrunchies and leg warmers and headed out the dorms towards Isla Vista. By the time we reached Del Playa it was about 9:00pm on a Friday night. Due to it being a Friday night, there were hundreds of adolescents walking up and down the street in search of a party. The majority of those around us were dressed in similar attire. Many females wore dresses and rompers, with the occasional shorts. Males were wearing simple shirts and tank tops with their shorts. My friends and I would interact with those we walked past, saying hello or stopping to talk to those we knew. Compared to those that surrounded us we looked ridiculous. …show more content…
We got constant comments and glares from those that we passed. We were constantly asked “Where are you going like that?”, “Aren’t you in the wrong decade?” and many more questions such as these. Many people felt more comfortable talking to us and making comments because of our different attire. Some chose to ignore us as we walked by and pretended we were the exact same as the hundreds of young adults that surrounded us. Dressing differently that the normal attire was definitely an uncomfortable feeling. It felt weird to have everyone’s eyes on you for a feature that was not connected to you. I believe that clothes are not technically a part of you and therefore you should never be judged in any way on what you are wearing. It took some time for me to warm up to the reaction that we were getting, but eventually I was able to have fun with it. My friends and I soaked up the attention. We talked to as many people as we could and we danced through the street, making the experience

They appeared to have little to worry about in regards to their appearance; I even spotted one boy in blue jeans and a plain t-shirt. The majority of them undoubtedly spent mere minutes getting dressed that night, and as uncomfortable as collared shirts and ties may be, they always had the option to loosen ties, roll up sleeves, or otherwise alter their clothing to allow for more comfort. Dressing up was not an event in itself, but rather a minor nuisance that had little effect on the overall experience. Nonetheless, male judgement still shapes the idea of beauty in both females and other males.…

or, "Wow, you look different," but it was always in a kind manner; many also asked why I had changed my appearance. I felt empowered and confident, but I struggled with focusing since I was concerned about how I looked. I would begin walking, or even just stand up, feeling poised and optimistic until I began worrying if my hair looked okay or if my skirt was positioned improperly. It also took me quite a bit longer to get ready in the morning and I had to curl my hair the night before. I was not surprised by anyone's reaction because I know that people are naturally inclined to respect and think nicely of those dressed well since it's eye-pleasing.…

Sports players like Bobby Jones, Johnny Weissmuller set the sports trend and many people admired them, Teens dressed so weirdly, but obviously didn’t realize it at the time. “Through their influences, knickers and knee-high socks, two-colored saddle shoes, swimming trunks, full-length raccoon fur coats, and other sporty attire replaced the more conventional tweed sportswear of the previous decade” (The1920’s lifestyles and social trends). Some kids didn’t only dress like their sport hero but just their job role models. Charles Lindbergh was an airplane pilot and he inspired young men to dress like him. When in the course of life events, we come to Declare our independence from our school Dress Code Violation. We are sure enough that our students from AHS would be mature enough to know what is right to use and what is wrong to use. We should not limit our choices of dress wear because of stereotypes. We live in a 21 century where we should see past what people wear. We hold these truths to be self-evident because we believe that we have the right to wear ripped jeans or anything that we are not allowed to wear.…

How people react towards someone who breaks an everyday society’s idea of a social norm can vary in many different ways all depending on the situation, the people surrounding the incident and who is breaking the norm. I, wearing pajamas in public setting such as the mall, my mother office, in my neighborhood and general popular places around town caused many to quite surprising reactions from my peers, family, strangers and friends. Sometimes people’s reactions are quite subtle and they tend not to show any interest in a change of action at all. However, at other times a person reaction to an alteration in the social norm can be quite large and exaggerated. Norm Violations: Violation and Observations When we witness someone violate a norm, we question their intent of doing so. Most of us believe that there are common/set guidelines, rules, and behaviors we should, and often times do, follow. The way we react to norm violations is subjective, it varies from person to person and can either be negative or positive. Through my own observations, and probably through many others, I noticed that people tend to react fairly similar.…

The video Entertainment, Consumerism & Social Control: A Simple & Fun Introduction captures the social control that the “One Dimensional Man” by Marcuse is getting at. Marcuse explains that society did not develop as Marx predicted, and individuals bought into the idea of consumption, which is alive in our culture today. The consumption of products distracts us from the reality of what class we belong to. He also brought up the idea that people weren’t aware that they were not in control when it came to consumption. In the video, they use the phrase “Go back to bed America, your government is in control”.…

Today students often care more about fashion than getting an education. For many years, people have been arguing about the idea of making school uniforms mandatory. Some schools already require their students to wear uniforms, but others are still deciding whether to make it mandatory or not. Schools that have already implemented this policy have seen the benefits of it. School uniforms should be required because it saves time and lot of money for the parents, reduces peer pressure and bullying, and helps prevent the use of inappropriate clothing in a formal institute.…

So I took of work, grabbed my two best friends, Trey and Parker, and we set out on nonstop adventure for 3 days, which led to a Whataburger bill of over $100, running from security, meeting and talking to complete strangers, 4 hours of sleep, killer stories, a run in with the cops, a few tanks of gas, and what would this story be with coming close dying once or twice, I mean its only in my nature.…

As a white male high school junior I completely oppose the stringent dress code that was put into effort. The fact that students’ freedom to express themselves have been taken away is very unconstitutional, especially in a country that has always promoted free speech and one’s freedom to express themselves. Neither a school administrator nor anyone else should have the right to tell a student what to wear or to look. It should not be constitutional to tell a boy to cut his hair as it does in the Perryville School District dress code, as the length of a boys’ hair should not affect his right to learn. For example, in the case of Chesley Karr, who fought for his right to wear his hair long to school, I found it extremely unjust that he was robbed of a public school education simply because his hair was long.…
