The current political issue I chose for my paper was the Ferguson Black Lives Matter protest being the “new” civil rights movement. I found an article titled The Violence of Nonviolence by Simone Sebastian at The Washington Post, and in my opinion, it makes the best use of history for the 1960s movement. She doesn’t make the best use of history for the 2010s movement. The article describes how Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an organization, a movement, and a shout for racial justice. In the article Sebastian says both movements have had back lash by Americans.…

One argument from Maslow’s essay “The Need to Know and the Fear of Knowing” which directly relates to A Separate Peace is that one often evades knowledge of their true selves. Although Phineas’s nonchalant and loyal characteristics make him seem almost godlike, he seems to also fear certain aspects of himself. In particular, he has a fear that his basic desires contradict the innocent person everyone perceives him to be. For many of the students at the Devon school, the war seems almost fictional, partially because of the attitudes of people such as Finny. Finny’s ignorance of the rules, yet simultaneous loyalty and sincerity, made him seem innocent despite the trouble he got himself into.…

The most memorable terrorist attack from 2001 to 2015 was on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001 (Paul, Dorin, Bugnar, and Mester 6). About three-thousand innocent people lost their lives during this violent attack (“Department of Government and Justice Studies”). This important event in American History should be remembered to hopefully prevent it from ever happening again. As terrorism changed from the 1980s to today, so did the types of people who became terrorists (O’Connor). This paper will look at what terrorism is, the types of terrorism, who becomes terrorists, and what their motives may be.…

How the Conversation About Our Police Force has Changed The police are responsible for our well-being, our protection, controlling crime, and maintaining public order. These individuals are held to a high standard, however, as Voltaire said best, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The police force is generally well-respected and supported; however, recent police brutality cases have been causing an uproar, and the media heavily influences the image people have of the police. A big topic that has risen in the past year is racism. Kathleen McCarthy, President of Smith College, sent an email to her students regarding to the deaths of two boys, Eric Garner and Michael Brown. In the email, she stated that all lives matter, this caused many students to criticize her for referring to the opposition of the saying “Black Lives Matter”. Many police officers today are now being criticized and presumed guilty when approaching any black man that is in the wrong. This kind of behavior should not be happening because it is causing our law enforcement not to be able to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.…
