Breach In The Classroom

I have always felt the urge to help others, whether it is through community outreach activities or simply helping my peers learn a melody in my orchestra class. This is why when I was granted the opportunity to become a peer tutor and teacher's aide at my school starting my Junior year, I did not hesitate to take it. I tutor students in the resource program for one hour a day, during school, five days a week in multiple subjects including Math, History, and English. When I began tutoring, I had no idea to what extent this experience would change my outlook on my role as a tutor. After weeks of trying to get him on task, I soon learned that with Oswaldo, I had to reach out and walk him through the steps of each problem by doing it alongside of him on the whiteboard, rather than just telling him what to do. Eventually, in around two months, I had helped Oswaldo bring his math grade upfrom a D to a B-, something that even his teacher seemed to doubt he could do. Along with math, oswaldo came to me with other subjects, like United States History, and it was not long after his math grade improved that he started to show the initiative to raise his other grades. Not only did his grades improve, but his outlook on himself and his ability did too. Seeing him succeed and become motivated again is what makes me so passionate about helping others. However, it was not like that for every other student I tutored- they all had their individual needs that helped them learn and excel in the subjects they were struggling in.
