Brazil has very incredible geography. Brazil is located on the continent of South America. One example of an unusual plant is Curare. Curare is a poisonous plant used by tribes to stun animals and relax muscles. Brazilians use the plant Quinine to help fight malaria. The Amazon Rainforest possesses 10% of the species of the world. The destruction of the rainforest endangers jaguars, the giant otter, the harpy eagle, the hyacinth macaw, and the marsh deer. The tapir is the largest animal in the Amazon Rainforest. One last animal that is unbelievable is the golden lion tamarin which almost became extinct but was saved by scientists. It started when the Portugese discovered it in 1500. In 1532, the first colony was founded in Brazil. In Brazil there were Indians that would eat lost sailors. The main export in Brazil for a while was brasilwood. Then Brazil’s main export changed to sugar. At one point in Brazil’s history, sugar was as valuable as gold. In fact, in 1600, Brazil’s sugar production was so great that it became number one in the world in producing sugar. In 1695, Brazil struck gold, literally! Sugar production completely failed and gold mining temporarily took its place. Then, only 25 years later, Brazilians found diamonds. In 1763 Brazil made its capital Rio de Janeiro. Just a few years later, Napoleon attacked Portugal, Brazil’s mother country. The royal court and their family quickly sailed away and moved to Brazil. In 1822, the Brazilians were tired of their mother country Portugal, so they declared their independence and made Pedro I their emperor. Brazil then turned from a dictatorship to a republic in 1884.
In the modern age (1900 to present), life has been very unusual. In this period, Getuho Vargas re-claimed a dictatorship. Even though he was a dictator, he helped the Allies in World War II. Ultimately, he was pressured to step down from his dictatorship. He committed suicide in 1954. Then, in 1960, Brasilia became the capital.
