The memoir Autobiography of a Face, written by Lucy Grealy, is about a girl working towards being brave and overcoming everything that she has been through. Bravery does not always have to mean being strong and never being upset. Bravery is standing up for yourself and even if your break down and open up at times, that makes you a stronger person than someone who bottles everything up. You are controlling how things go for yourself, which is one of the most courageous things you can do. Lucy’s suffering of bravery is a conquering element in the person she has become. This brings up many different things to discuss about the theme of being brave. Lucy is not giving herself the courage to tell herself that she is good enough, and we sense that she has given up, or she has no more opportunities. With the attitude that she is weak, she will be. This is something people relate to daily and we need this to come to an end. Bravery that is portrayed in the book is relevant to many different aspects we use in our day to day lives. As we go through our days, we stand up for something we believe in. That is bravery. If there is one thing we can take away from Lucy’s memoir, it is that we should never keep things wrapped up inside and just open up to people we trust or people who can relate. Look back at the quote on page 150, she has changed and turned into someone with no hope in herself or self love. Find ways to emotionally connect with yourself and to overcome fear. To find the courage to do something small can have a huge impact on someone else or just make you feel a little better about
