The leaders use fear right in the beginning when dauntless leaders want the faction to jump and no one knows what’s at the landing. “I am proud, it will get me into trouble someday, but today it makes me brave. I said I would jump.”(Roth 66) This shows that Tris is stepping up to the task. Dauntless leaders used fear to gain bravery out of their factions right when they first met at headquarters.
For the greater good is used throughout the story which is also dystopian literature. When Tris realizes that bravery is not about tattoes and piercings. It’s about standing up for what you and who you trust. This what she learns from the dauntless faction “It’s just ordinary acts of bravery.” This shows that you might be scared of something but you still have to face your fears. this is what determines tris throughout the whole book, bravery.
Finally, when the Dauntless faction is put under a mind controlling serum. Which is physiological control. Beatrice and four, the only ones that have immunity to it because of their divergence. Have to rebel against the corrupted leaders. They and Beatrice’s mother and father. Who later die in war try to disable the serum from the dauntless headquarters? “Be brave Beatrice I love you.”(Root 443) this shows that Beatrice’s mom wants her to be brave. While the dauntless faction is now corrupted. They still thought biters and four to be brave.
