Bravery and selflessness are not incompatible because when Al was suppose to go and get knives thrown at him, Tris decides to stand up for him and do it instead. The fractions are opposite in the sense of Abnegation doesn’t deal do violence and Dauntless doesn’t have to be nice to other people. Four mentions to Tris throughout the book about how Dauntless wasn’t always competitive and about teamwork, “I do not want to be greedy; I do not want to be like Eric, terrified of other people’s strength” (Roth 154). “In the book there is a manifesto about all of the fractions, in the Dauntless manifesto it says, “We believe in facing that fear no matter what the cost to our comfort, happiness, or even our sanity” (Roth 47).
