Bernard, while clearly more aware of his surroundings than others still struggled to realize the true negativity of soma. Although he is constantly having strange feelings, someone can convince Bernard to take another soma. Bernard’s biggest problem is his silent yearning to fit in with his peers. During his Solidarity Service praising Henry Ford, it is routine to take soma. “‘I drink to the imminence of His Coming,’ he repeated, with a sincere attempt to feel that the coming was imminent” (83). Although he does not have the same feeling from praising their Ford and Savior, Bernard makes a concerted effort to fit in a place he does not belong. As Bernard starts feeling he is fitting in, it gets to his head to the point where he starts to lose focus, and the soma is not so frightening. He has indirectly been influenced by the World-State through his entire life. His curiosity is fueled by stories. When he finally makes it to the World-State, he realizes how destructive it truly is. He starts to have feelings for Lenina, real ones that should not be contained. Lenina’s intentions are to get with him, but the same, pure feelings are not there due to the belief that feeling should not come from being involved with another person. The only way she knows how to show affection is through sex. “No one was allowed to love anyone too much; there were no temptations to resist, and if something unpleasant were to happen, there was always soma” (Bloom 71). John loves Lenina, and he feels the true pain of knowing she will not feel the same way because of soma. Instead of numbing that frustration with soma, he chooses to feel the way everyone should. Although John chooses feelings over soma, he ends up committing suicide due to his frustration of the society's actions (Newman 63).
