A Sense of Relief I believe that it is a relief to know that great literature is based on extremely heart wrenching experiences since we can see that we are not alone, and we can overcome these obstacles. After Jennifer and her mother engage in a dissension, it results in further rebellion from Jennifer and the silent treatment between the two individuals. Through this example, people are able to learn that they are not alone, as there are other individuals who face similar conflicts. Afterwards, her mother says “You’re untrustworthy, you’re irresponsible, and you’re a disappointment.” (Braunschweiger 272). Jennifer’s dispute with her mother displays a typical example of a conflict with our parents, specifically between mother and daughter.

This can be a relief to hear because the majority of people can commiserate and relate to this situation. Most people understand how difficult it may be to maintain composure after a dispute with our family. It is reassuring to know that life is not a fairytale; that things aren’t always perfect. When we are aware that other people face the same struggles, it is a reassurance that keeps us bound to reality. In addition, Jennifer’s breakdown after finding Jon with Michele displays how a miserable event can lead us to realize our mistakes. “Her name was Michele, and she was a year younger than me and had a reputation for going too far with too many people. Standing there in the middle of some stranger’s sunken living room where people were dancing, I started crying.” (Braunschweiger 273). Jennifer suffers from her first broken heart. She had previously been arguing with her mother because she was out with Jon late in the evening. She has to admit defeat when Jon ends up hurting her.
