The carrying capacity of Wisconsin Fast Plants (Brassica Rapa) in a 2-liter bottle growing environment Introduction In this lab we conducted an experiment in which we created a habitat in which plants grown; We will determine if the plants will grow successfully in this habitat. We will plant “Wisconsin Fast Plant”seeds, also known as (Brassica Rapa). The Wisconsin Fast Plants are a small, fragile sized plant that has a short growing period and produces seeds at a high density. We will observe them as frequently as possible and record the heights each day we make observations.…
Pinto beans or in other words common beans are the most abundant beans in both Americans, making it major source of daily nutrients for large number of civilians. This experiment was done to examine if the number of seeds used in a specific area would affect the growth process using two pots (Control, Experiment). Control pot had two Pinto beans, while the Experiment pot had four seeds. Both pots were placed in the same room with same amount of water supply and light.…
Brassica rapa is a Wisconsin fast plant which is as well a member of the mustard family. These plants are considered fast plants because they develop very quickly, flowering in 13-18 days and completing their entire reproductive cycle in about 35 days. With these Wisconsin fast plants we observed the happening of Gregor Mendel’s principles of inheritance patterns. Starting off, some history of Gregor Mendel is that he was an Austrian monk who studied the inheritance of seven different traits in the garden pea, and developed a set of principles to describe the spread of those characteristics (Casper et al 2016). Gregor Mendal was easily able to achieve this by using true breeding plants.…
The lab for this report was at the Sam Houston State University, Horticultural center, Huntsville, Texas. We received various plants from distributor and my group was assigned Celosia, Dust silver, and Petunia plugs. We planted the plugs plants into various pots, six inch pots, four inch and six cell packs were used during this report. In preparation of planting Miracle Gro potting mix was used as the media, we dumped the media into out of the bag unto the table, mixed the media with water in making it moist for better growth. The next step was to fill in the four-inch, six-inch and six Cell Park with the moist media and transplant the plugs into various container.…
This experiment was started with three trays, each of the trays having either basic, neutral, or acidic soil in it. Once there was a hole in the soil of each tray roughly 1cm deep and 2.5cm apart two Brassica seeds were planted in the hole. Next making sure to keep track of which plants were acidic, basic, and neutral thee trays were labeled and note was taken on which tray had which soil on a separate lab paper. After the Brassica seeds were planted they then were placed under constant light for two weeks. two weeks later, the plants had begun to sprout.…
The Gloriosa superba, also known as the Glory Lily is a scrambling tuberous perennial climber that can grow up to four metres tall (weeds.brisbane.qld.gov.au). It’s Shiny bright green leaves are arranged alternatively along the stem (weeds.brisbane.qld.gov.au) and long tendrils curl at the tip of the herbaceous weed (weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au). Bright red and orange flowers make it a very distinctive plant and is rarely confused with other species (Keysaver.lucidental.org). The flowers are always made up six pedals which have wavy edges and are strongly turned backwards to support the stems (weeds.brisbane.qld.gov.au).…
Determining the impact of Auxin in pea plants, and its effect on lateral bud growth Megan Posey Bio 121-104 John Barry 10/23/16 Abstract Auxin is a hormone that helps to regulate bud growth, cell elongation, and many other aspects of plants. Apical dominance is a phenomenon that occurs due to the presence of auxin and stops lateral bud growth.…
Determination of GAPC Gene Sequence for Brassica Oleracea var. acephala and Brassica Oleracea var. capitate INTRODUCTION GAPDH is an enzyme that is encoded by the GAPC gene and catalyzes glycolysis’ sixth step which is responsible for energy metabolism (Bio Rad 2017). Aside from its role in glycolysis, GAPDH is also known for its evolutionary significance specifically that it has roles in cellular function like nuclear RNA export and DNA replication and repair (Tatton et al. 2001). GAPDH has been found in apoptosis, neurodegenerative disease, and viral pathogens which is part of its biomedical significance (Tatton et al. 2001).…
Boechera stricta Boechera stricta, belongs to mustard family Brassicaceae. It is restricted to higher elevations and faces both abiotic (e.g. drought) and biotic stressors (e.g. herbivore) at low elevation range limits (Rushworth et al. 2011). For understanding genetic controls on ecologically, these species are very important which provide further understanding of underlying mechanisms in natural populations as compared to artificial lab experiments. Boechera stricta is widely distributed in the western the United States. It is well adapted to diverse ecological conditions in whole United States.…
Human must plant seed corn for it to grow because the leave husk protecting the kernels prevent natural germination. The farmer's insert several corn kernels into small hills about a yard apart and added fish heads or bird guano as fertilizer. Then they planted beans, squash, and other vegetables among the hills. This method of cultivation called Milpa farming prevented exhaustion of the soil and produce a balance of human…
Kyle Standage 6th period Mrs. Abdelhaq 2 October 2017 Background Research Does the weight of a seed affect how fast a plant grows? A seed is “the fertilized, matured ovule of a flowering plant, containing an embryo or rudimentary plant.” (Dictionary.com) Seeds go through a process, called germination, to grow. The seed first has its roots break out and grab hold of the soil. After the roots have a hold of the soil a small plant will sprout from the ground.…

Given the opportunity to co-lead this project, my colleagues and I have germinated seeds and planned how to utilize the space in a field to prevent unwanted breeding between different strains of hemp. Furthermore, this project has given me the opportunity to volunteer on the farm with labor and learn about the dynamics of an industrial farming operation to better plan our project on this farm. Ideally, we anticipate producing a hemp plant that survives the harsh environment and elevation of Colorado and produces a large seed for hemp seed oil extractions. We have designed this experiment to take 3-4 growing seasons and each season should produce a plant that is better suited to grow outdoors and produce larger seeds, which can be used each after harvesting next season’s seeds. When planning for a multiple growing season breeding project, it allows for the opportunity of any marker-assisted breeding systems developed in our lab or elsewhere to be utilized for this project to increase the success rate of obtaining this specialized strain of hemp.…
The women moved through each little mound, planting between six and nine corn seeds in each. They worked with such skill that they could plant over two hundred and twenty-five mounds before breakfast. Along with the corn, beans and squash were planted in the same round surfaces. The beans replaced the nitrogen that the corn depleted from the soil. The corn provided stalks for the beans to climb and in return the beans kept the corn from falling in the wind.…
It includes the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds and non-food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants(Hagen, 1957). They use skills and simple technology to grow food. There is no artificial application of water to the sand or soil to assist the growth in agricultural crops and there is also no usage of fertilisation techniques being taken in help of growth. They deal more with ground crops and harvested fruits.…
