Branch Dividians: Vernon Howell's Cult

Improved Essays
In Texas 1993 there was a guy named Vernon Howell who was a part of a group named branch Dividians. Vernon Howell changed his name to David Koresh and created a cult. A cult means a religious group which promotes worship of a human leader and devotion of one's life to a specific purpose. David made a cult than stored a whole bunch of gun powder and guns and made an army which he said he wanted to make an army of God. This whole entire thing about how Waco was destroyed occurred very interesting to me, but after reading a lot about Waco I came to understand one main thing, it is that David Koresh was the stupidest guy I know but that’s after Putin off course. I mean he created a cult and poisoned the people’s minds that he heard from God that God wanted him to have any women from his cult, all the money, everything. David also made them believe that god wanted him to build an army of god. …show more content…
Some people were buried alive others suffocated from the gas and the fire and some were shot. A close friend of David who helped him with the cult later resized that he made a mistake by helping David he ended up shooting him and then shot himself with the same exact gun. An FBI guard got stabbed in the chest during the attack but ended up surviving. Seventy six people died during this tragic event only nine people were able to leave the building safely.
Not everyone knows the truth about who fired first but many sources say that the branch divisions fired first on Davids command because the FBI was trying to enter the building and they didn’t let them. Twenty years later the surviving kids were interviewed and told their stories. It is interesting to know that even though David new that the FBI was going to show up he didn’t act like the new, he was not ready, he tried to call it off but it did not work, so he thought only had one choice and it was to fight

On March 5, 1770, a small group of people had started to provoke a British soldier. When he had called for help, seven other soldiers and Captain Thomas Preston had gone to the Custom House to protect him. Upon arriving, the small crowd had turned into a much larger, angrier, group of more than a hundred. The group had the soldiers surrounded, so it was almost impossible for them to retreat and any hope of calming the crowd down was lost. When one soldier started firing his musket, the others had followed suit.…

The sixties were a golden age for cults and religious fringe groups, and Colorado, particularly Boulder, was infamous for being one of the country’s most futile initiation and recruit centers, much like it is today. As of today, conservative estimates show that there are over 2 million adult Americans involved in cults. In fact, it is so rampant to the point that it has become impossible to walk five steps without having someone approach to ask whether a passerby would be interested in going for a Buddhist meeting. Much of Sullivan’s success can be attributed to his drive and passion for excellence in investigating cults. He engaged the hawkers, attended every prayer circle, meditation circle, and shamanic…

Groupthink happens when a gathering settles on flawed choices since group pressure leads to a disintegration of "mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment" Groups influenced by groupthink disregard choices and tend to take unreasonable activities that dehumanize different groups. A group is particularly helpless against mindless obedience when its individuals are comparative in past and when there are no reasonable standards for decision-making. Cult Mentality happens when a gathering is not completely mindful of the degree to which individuals may have been controlled, misused, even mishandled. The group shows unnecessarily passionate and unquestioning responsibility to its head and (whether alive or dead) respects his conviction framework, belief system, and practices as the Truth, as law. Mind-adjusting practices are utilized as a part of abundance and serve to stifle questions about the group and its leader(s).…

One of the ways he achieved this was by fostering a negative idea of those from the outside. The technical term is called splitting. It changes the perception and reaction to people, objects, and situation from the outside; it makes cult members “fearful or hostile towards those on the outside, but often there is an air of pity or even condescension towards those “unenlightened” individuals who are not part of the group (Perkins and Salande 387). Most of these members believe that they are a part of something better than what the mainstream society has to offer, thus reinforcing the mindset that they are a part of something. In their article “The Branch Davidians and the Politics of Power and Intimidation” Lawrence Rifkind and Loretta Harper say “the most important rule was never to admit to anything when questioned by outsiders” (70).…
