Elizabeth Kolbert's article, “Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds,” in the New Yorkers February 2017 issue looks at some main ideas in three different psychological books about patterns in human reasoning and attempts to connect them to today’s politics. Her explanation of the studies and their outcomes were superb, though she could have done a better job at connecting these points to her political conclusion. It is difficult to distinguish what her main point is. She starts the article by describing a couple experiments done at Stanford on human reasoning.…

Referred to as “hypnopedia,” Huxley addresses the problem of brainwashing, a problem that in today’s world is not in the lure of soma and Obstacle Golf, but in the government, religion, and media that controls the masses. Brainwashing is defined as the action of “making someone adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure”. The term "brainwashing" was coined by Edward Hunter—a CIA operative also working as a journalist. Hunter exposed that the Chinese government was using drugs, hypnosis, classical conditioning, and repeated terrorist and anti-American philosophical propaganda as system of mind control to turn enemy citizens that they had captured into supporters of their government. Backing up the definition…
In this chapter, “Idiot Nation”, the author Michael Moore tackles the theme of education in the U.S.A., with a style that ranges from extremely serious to the ironic pushed, with proposals also sometimes serious, sometimes blatantly provocative. Moore shows us the other face of the American school: so much science, but little historical culture, poor memory, stereotyped behaviors, total dependence on companies that sponsor books and courses of study. With the result that around the 40% of prestigious American universities (e.g., Harvard, Yale or Stanford) can not say in which century took place the American Civil War and “there are forty-four million of Americans who cannot read and write above a fourth-grade level— in other words, who are…
Public discussion is frequently a positive platform for opening discussion topics and easy worldwide access. However, in Merchants of Doubt authors Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway presents the dangers of relying on the public or popular platform. One of the major issues is the public platform is the number of people in the discussion only fuels to the argument, thus it takes longer to achieve their objectives. The other issue is the stakes and implications the debates have on policy. In general, Merchants of Doubt teaches readers it is important to understand the source of the issue versus what is being debated and to further examine the purpose behind each side.…

The backfire effect occurs when indoctrination and ideology trump reality. When a person is presented with facts and evidence, it often does nothing to change their minds. The backfire effect is constantly shaping a person’s belief, keeping them leaning one way or the other through a process psychologist’s calls biased assimilation. As humans, we protect our beliefs even when they are false, and this leaves us open to misleading ourselves into pits and dead ends. We tend to quickly develop an irrational loyalty to our beliefs, and work hard to find evidence that supports those opinions and discredit, information that does not.…
That Critical thinking is more effective than fueling in diminishing debasement over the long haul. In this article I Recognized the reliant variable as the level of debasement and the autonomous variable as critical thinking over fueling. critical thinking suggests that considerable changes are achievable by successively propelling little, novel, fractional, or roundabout changes, frequently unobtrusively and under the radar of political and social strengths. Rather than pushing discount change through at "basic points," advocates of critical thinking exploit little open doors and utilize the multifaceted nature of strategy zones to progress exclusively minor however regularly in total huge changes. Regulatory authorities persuade legislators…
Many scientists such as Stanley Milgram, Erich Fromm, Lee Ross and Richard E. Nisbett have tested their theory of obedience to authority. Their findings might frighten people on how obedient people are and what the sick and twisted things people will do. An example of obedience to authority is the writing of this paper for Doctor Campbell, if not done properly with obedience the grade of the student will plummet. Another example of people listening to orders given by an authoritarian person that inflicted pain, suffering, and even death is the Holocaust; the Holocaust was set up by Adolf Hitler and Nazi officers in concentration camps. The Nazi officers were told to run these concentration camps filled with innocent people and to exterminate…

I believe in the power of open mindedness. In allowing yourself to experience new things and giving new people a chance to experience them with you. In giving things a moment to impact your life, because going through life with a closed mind will lead to nothing but normality and ignorance. I used to sit near the swings with my friend as we watched all the other kids run by. Everyone smiled and laughed as they played cops and robbers or jumped from new heights.…
“The Blind Side” is a film depiction of the life of NFL left tackle, Michael Oher and his miraculous transition from being a homeless teen to becoming an NFL first round draft. The film follows the development of Michael as he is taken off the street by the Tuohy’s and with their support became involved with football. I chose this film because it portrays the social and behavioural development of a teen without a stable upbringing and how it affects his relationship and encounters with others. The movie does not only show the development aspect of one stage of adolescence but follows Michael’s character from childhood to his adult years. As well, the movie forms basis of comparison between Michael and the Tuohy children.…
