He worked as a lawyer, he was very organized, took care of paying the bills, and enjoyed things such as Japanese cinema and highbrow conversations. However, when Alan awoke from his several week long coma, he was toddler-like in cognitive and psychological ability, as well as the entire right side of his body being paralyzed. His official diagnosis was diffused axonal injury (DAI) with subdural hematomas on his frontal lobes. Imajo, T. and Roessman, U. (1984) broadly define DAI as a distinct form of head injury induced by direct external force at the time of trauma and characterized by axonal swelling, hemorrhages or lacerations of the corpus callosum, and of the brain stem. Basically, the axons in the brain, which are key in sending and receiving signals, had been severely sheared off during the accident.…
I was going to fight this injury off,” said the author. For Loesch, brain injury was both a curse and a blessing. “The knowledge I gained from experiencing such a physically destabilizing injury more profoundly affected my characteristics than anything I could have learned through other means.” The author expresses solidarity with people who are recovering from serious injuries and hopes his story will help alleviate their…
In the film “When Billy Broke his Head” by Billy Golfus I understood several things about people with brain injuries. There are certain things people with brain injuries can and cant do. This injury may not stop the person from doing day-to-day activities, but leaves no trust in other people because that individual sees a barrier between them being a regular person. In the film, a survivor himself told the story and this gives us insight of how it really is living with a disability due to a server accident. This brain injury stopped this individual from getting jobs and getting a regular paycheck because they said he had a disability and couldn’t work.…
A disease such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is prevalent after multiple head injuries have been acquired. CTE is only detected when there has been an autopsy done. Out of 165 candidates that checked for CTE 131 were found to have the neurodegenerative disease. This disease is not only one that loses cognition such as memory and concentration but also can cause a time when one can have anger issues and it leads up to later issues. Research has been done measuring what has happened to the matter of the brain.…
Visualize a disease that leaves its victims powerless but are completely aware of everything that is in sight and the state the body is in. With every intention to move, the victim has no control over the body’s muscles, for not a single finger is lifted nor a smile displayed. Such a disease does exist and has affected many lives worldwide. This awful illness is named ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. With many diseases in the world, countless terrible ones are unknown like CTE, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, which is also a progressive neurodegenerative disease.…
Like a muscle, your brain can also be injured. Unlike bruises, breaks, or sprains, you cannot simply apply a cast, brace, or bandage to help heal them. The brain has a very different way of healing itself. Since the brain is your main control room of your body, it takes time and patience to heal depending on the…
Further research may provide information about genetic variants which put certain individuals at greater risk for CTE. (SpringerPlus, 2016). This could provide insight on why two individuals with the same amount of head trauma may not both have CTE. Research may also be done on treatment for CTE and managing its symptoms as suicide is a common result of the disease (Iverson, 2013). More information on the exact determinants of mild traumatic brain injuries is needed as it can help stop CTE before it even begins (SpringerPlus, 2016).…
People with brain injuries can loss control and alertness, and as a conclusion they can operate carelessly(Miller…
Many changes have been made on how to recognize this injury over the past 10 years. More research and awareness is being done which will only give better perspective on how to manage this escalating…
As we saw in our last post the very first thing recommended by doctors after a concussion is “rest and recovery,” including getting as much sleep as possible. Indeed, the best course of action for someone who has suffered a blow to the head and has concussion symptoms is to be evaluated by a brain injury specialist immediately and to implement a plan designed to give some the best chances for a successful recovery which starts off with maximizing sleep and restful activities. It’s well known that many mild traumatic brain injury and concussion patients suffer from disruptions of their normal sleep/wake patterns and can develop long-term sleep disorders. Now, many experts are in agreement that how well someone’s brain recovers after a concussion may depend on the quality of sleep they get in the days and weeks following their injury.…
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, also known as CTE, is a disease caused by multiple injuries to the head over time (Brain Line, Mayo Clinic Staff, What is CTE). The symptoms from these traumatic head injuries are not seen until years after the injuries first occur (Mayo Clinic Staff). These injuries cause damage to the nerve cells in the brain, which leads to less communication between the cells and also causes an increase in the protein Tau in the brain (Mayo Clinic Staff, What is CTE). The symptoms start with small behavioral changes, such as, headaches and confusion, then gradually increase in severity and have lead to unexplainable depression, aggression, and thoughts of suicide in many people diagnosed (What is CTE). This disease has…
If you are student, you will need to take a breaks from stressful schoolwork and tests. You should stay home from school until you feel well enough to return. You do not want to make the brain injury worse, which can last a lifetime. A note from your doctor can help the school to understand that you will need special treatment. You can also have a coach, your parents explain what happened, and why you need extra help.…
The prevalence of depression following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the psychosocial risk factors associated with this diagnosis will be explored. A total of 100 Australian adults between the age of 20-50 (N=60 TBI and N=40 non-TBI) will participate in clinical interviews and complete rating scales to assess depression and psychosocial risk factors. It is predicted that individuals who have sustained a TBI will report higher clinically significant rates of depression than those who have no incurred a TBI. Additionally, it is predicted that perceived stress, pain reported and poor psychosocial functioning will be antecedent psychosocial risk factors for developing depression after a sustained TBI. Implications of the results for TBI and depression risk factors for future research will be discussed.…
Who would have known that one little piece of equipment can change lives? If you could prevent traumas would you? Helmets could prevent traumas, including brain injuries or life altering tragedies. Every step onto any field, gym, skate park, or mountain resort without a helmet could potentially be life altering. “In 2012, 12% of all ER visits (163,670) involved a concussion, the equivalent of one every three minutes.…
Concussions To most people they never think that they will end up getting a concussion, I was one of those people. When people get concussions, they don’t think that much of it besides they need to take it easy. What they don’t realize is that concussions are more serious than just taking it easy. I have had past and present experiences of concussions and I know that they are nothing to play around with. There are so many symptoms of a concussion that doctors or athletic trainers need to check for.…
