The way someone gains power like Jack did in Lord of the Flies is by showing qualities that make them seem strong or by being apart of a hierarchy. This is seen not only in the book Lord of the Flies but in real life as well. The most current example would be North Korea using propaganda and lies to make the United States a common enemy among their people. Another reason is due to the brain's development and conditioning. Naturally we are all afraid of death and want to avoid it. That being said if a trusted source tells us about a life experience or a story whether true or false that is perceived as a threat we will generally avoid it.
