“When Brains Attack” Podcast By: Robert Krulwich & Jad Abumrad (1 hour long) Brains are amazing. They have so much power and control over us; that sometimes one feels as if they are a completely separate force from us that can go against our will. In this podcast they tell us four stories of how the brain took a course of it’s own. From a fiber optic wire in a mouse’s brain, to a change in space position, to secrets our brain keeps from us, to a complete power out of a section of the brain, we will learn of how our brains control our viewpoint of the world surrounding us.…
The Mystery of Stephan Paddock’s Brain was published in the days following Mr. Stephan Paddock’s October 1st, 2017 mass killings spree of 58 people and leaving 851 injured. The article delves into the possible biological and psychological components which could have played a role in his decision-making processes. Given that the article was published less than a week after the shootings, it is plausible that the author did not have the proper diagnostic information to make educated assumptions about Mr. Paddock, which he concedes from the very beginning. David Eagleman is a writer, neuroscientist, and works as an adjunct professor at Stanford University. His understanding of the brain and what may drive an individual to commit such a heinous…

Psychology Lab Research Question: Why do older adults show a decrease on postural control? Hypothesis: Older adults with decreased knee or ankle threshold joint position sensation would show decreased postural control. • Threshold joint position is a test of sensory sensitivity used to quantify each subject’s proprioceptive abilities Methods: • 22 women and men, 70 yoa or older • all subjects had threshold joint position testing at ankle (plantar and dorsiflexion) and knee joints (flexion and extension) - Subjects were told to press a stop button the moment they detected movement in the joint - performance was measured in degree of joint rotation that occurred prior to their sensing movement - This data was used to categorize subjects…

1. Connect the concepts presented in the video to course concepts. After watching the video episode of The Secret Life of the Brain, the course concept that comes to mind are the Frontal lobe (Prefrontal cortex) of the brain and the amygdala. First, when watching the video episode, the episode discussed how the frontal lobe entitles how the brain helps humans to engage with each other and our environment.…
The videos “Plastic Brain 1” and “Plastic Brain 2,” illustrate how the brain is malleable and that it is critical to foster neural connections with respect to vision at an early age, otherwise those necessary connections may never be made. The patient depicted in the videos, Holly, is an infant with a cataract that was subsequently surgically removed. This example was employed in order to illustrate how the brain forms visual processing and the importance of early intervention should visual abnormalities be detected in infants. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s malleability. In other words, the human brain is constantly forming new neural pathways, adapting and changing as a result of learning and experience.…

“There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow,” this statement by Orison Swett Marden speaks truth to what the American soldier should believe after their return from war (Orison, 2015). In the article, The Invisible War on the Brain, explains the physiology and psychological effects that occur in a solider obtaining a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) while in the combat theater (Alexander, 2015). Unforeseen seen victims are the family and close friends that stand by the broken solider, or choose to walk away for their own reasons. Creative beneficial treatments have been discovered for these veterans. The present and future nurses could be the glue that holds the solider and their support system together throughout this treacherous path to recovery.…
Blogs 1. Do you have a monkey mind? You may have heard the phrase monkey mind. What does it mean?…
On day one, we watched two videos on the nervous system then took notes on the videos. On day three, we were introduced to the major parts of the brain, like broca area and cerebellum, and the functions. For this, we studied a powerpoint and then created an outline on the part of the brain based on the information provided. On day four, we demonstrated our knowledge of the major parts and functions of the brain. For this, we created a powerpoint with fifteen slides, showing the three major sections of the brain, we had to have pictures on each slides and interesting links we found on different parts of the brain.…
Dean Burnett is a neuroscientist at the University of Cardiff, a stand-up comedian, and a Guardian blogger. In his book, The Idiot Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains What your Head is Really Up To, he argues that our brains are fallible. The book covers several themes, but the most important themes are mind controls, mental health and fear. With respect, to the theme of mind controls Burnett explains that the brain’s control of the body sometimes results in irrational behaviours. For example, the neocortex, the part of the brain that deals with higher functions, is able to overrule basic human instincts that are essential for survival, which can result in extreme dieting and eating disorders.…
The scientific method is a procedure that is used by scientists now and in the past, dating back to the seventeenth century. The scientific method consists of observation, measurement, and experiment, and the creation and testing of hypotheses. There are several steps and different components to the scientific method that will (hopefully) answer the scientists’ questions, by the completion of the experiment. There are countless different reasons as to why a scientist would use the scientific method, but one area of research that is focused on is, biology. Biologists seek to find the answers to further and better understand the processes that occur in living systems.…
