Brain Gain City

Improved Essays
Brain-gain is when people with college degrees migrate towards desirable cities with the best opportunities for jobs and affordable living (Kotkin, 2011). The cities that are most affected are located in the south and mid-west, such as New Orleans, Nashville, and San Diego (Kotkin, 2011). According to Forbes, Jacksonville, Florida is a brain gain city, but lies low on the list of desirability (Kotkin, 2011). Other cities in Florida, including Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and Orlando have a great job growth, the jobs available are not necessarily high-paying, which is not what ideal for college students (Badenhausen, 2015). Florida is not a popular state for brain-gain because the average salary is below $50,000 (Badenhausen, 2015). The types …show more content…
Cities such as Boston, New York, and Los Angeles attain ample amount of jobs for people and are desired locations, but the cost of living is so high that young people cannot afford to stay (Kotkin, 2011). As a result, these cities are losing out on brain gain because people are unable to sustain a decent quality of life (Kotkin, 2011). One brain gain city that is involved in stem cell research and offers employment is New York City, where The New York Stem Cell Foundation is located (“The New York stem cell foundation,” n.d.). This was the only brain gain city I could find that is involved with such research. I would consider moving to a brain gain city because of the possible job opportunities there could be (Kotkin, 2011). But, I would also have to take other factors into consideration, such as location and the cost of living (Kotkin, 2011). After reading the article on New Orleans, I do think the city is a brain gain opportunity (Kotkin, 2011). Since hurricane Katrina, the city has built itself back up and people with their college degrees can apply new knowledge and ideas (Kotkin, 2011). I believe if more young individuals move to New Orleans it can be good for the economy because the population can increase, which can then increase productivity of consumers and increase business (Kotkin,

Summary: In the article “Brainology”, Dweck talk about two types of attitudes or mindsets. The two types are a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Students with a growth mindset tended to get up again from setbacks and continuously improve academically with added effort, while those with a fixed mindset had a mindset that their abilities is what they are stuck with, they are afraid to further challenge themselves; due to belief that they aren't capable. Dweck had concluded that praising one without any acknowledgement of effort tended to create a fixed mindset while those praised for hard work or effort were more likely to not only feel more confident but still kept trying even if a task was a challenge, making these qualities a growth mindset,…

The complexity of urban environments is something that I have become familiar with through my time spent working, volunteering and studying in Dorchester, MA – a financially diverse urban borough of greater Boston. Attending UMass Boston while living at home did not provide me enough opportunity to experience the city living. I always drove to campus since public transportation was not feasible. But volunteering at MGH in Downtown Boston and at Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester has prepared me for city challenges like travelling in a city using the crowded local subway and buses while being courteous to fellow passengers, and meeting the time schedules. Learning to travel light and staying vigilant helps me to reach my destination easily…

This pertains to all cities with sizeable young and educated immigrant communities, such as in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham, which make up the Research Triangle in North Carolina. In some cases, “According to Census’s calculations, the lifetime earnings of an education or arts major working in the service sector are actually lower than the average lifetime earnings of a high school graduate” (Owen and Sawhill 216).
