Brain Brawl: Sandalwood High School Analysis

Brain brawl is a club in sandalwood high school that entails competing with other schools in a jeopardy stylized game. During my time there the teachers in charge Mr. Alfonso and Ms. Copley used various methods of the social contract theory in order to figure out what the varsity team would be. Now there was around ten members during my senior year to break it down to seniority level we had: three seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and four freshmen. The major example of the social contract theory at work is the act of tacit consent due to all the senior members publicly consenting to the teachers that they were willing to be left out of the varsity team if the teachers believed that it would increase our chances of winning. The teachers in charge were going to vote on who they thought deserved to be on the team and without the senior’s consent there would be no fairness in the vote. If the stars aligned and we won the competition the whole school would be proud of the entire bran brawl team even if some members did not actually contribute in the competition. This willingness of sacrificing a little bit in order for the state to provide us with its benefits is an elementary example of the social contract theory (Wolff, 2006, pg.42). This idea would be put into fruition in the actual competition, while all three seniors had been selected one of them got less playing time then the others. This was due to the fact that our one junior was proven to be more useful in being in the rotation of people that can play. Messiah the senior that was affected by this was not mad at all about the decision and realized that with Selena (the junior) in his stead the team had a higher chance of winning a round.
