Native Americans have endured disease, colonization, and relocation from their homes. Much of their culture was drastically changed due to mission efforts and government intervention which led to massive acculturation. However, to claim that their culture was buried with their ancestors is a rather ignorant accusation. In other words, it was transformed to fit the view of modern society, but remaining in touch with their roots. To better understand this transformation, I have focused to analyze a painting by Oscar Howe (Native American) titled Rider which creates a unique blend of Native American and Western design.…

Looking at sculptures and paintings in person or in a museum rather than looking at them on a flat screen can drastically change the way you take in the artwork in many different ways. One good example is the Ladder for Booker T. Washington by Martin Puryear, which, in person, was vastly larger than I expected. When looking at an artwork in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, you get to observe details and witness different focal points that you would most likely miss looking at a computer. In Mart Puryear’s artwork, size, focal point, and surroundings can be wildly miscommunicated through a photograph. Size is a very important aspect in Ladder for Booker T. Washington, which is why I was astonished on how large the artwork was in person, compared to images that I’ve seen online.…

I have chosen an art from the Realism and Romantic period for my project and will compare paintings by Jean-François Millet title The Gleaners and Eugène Delacroix title The Natchez. These two pictures have similar landscapes but hides the hardship and suffering whice have been shewed from the foreground of the paintings. Judging from the pictures The Gleaner and The Natchez, it is fair to say that “Picture say a thousand words” but hides the true story. The Gleaner painting was created in 1857 and the foreground of the photos shows three women in the field planting or harvesting crops and a beautiful landscape.…

Art, Action & Revival by David S. Fetcho is definitely one of the most thought out and thoughtful articles that I have read on the church and theatre in a long time. Fetcho begins his article with stating that “in many ways, the world of art and the Christian church are parallel universes. Both are concerned with the goal of becoming the point of social, psychological and spiritual integration for individuals and for society as a whole.” He’s quite right of course, and goes onto how the church and theatre ought to be married in the dramatic arts. He argues for the idea that the Christian artist, though a hundred years ago would have been crucified in the Church, is valiantly attempting to “reclaim lost ground--reclaiming territory that has…

In a world becoming increasingly saturated in media, the narratives of many different cultures are spreading throughout the world, and have a greater influence as people across the globe have access to these narratives. What happens, though, when the stories the world knows about a culture are told exclusively through the eyes of foreigners? Can an outsider really know enough about another culture to tell a complex, realistic narrative about the people they are trying to represent? Too often, the Western world has a disproportionate amount of influence over the narratives of other cultures, causing stories about cultures in Africa and the Eastern world to be overflowing with stereotypes, and offensive portrayals of the people who live there. Western story tellers have the tendency to inaccurately depict foreign cultures to make them fit their own simplified perception of them, and in doing so, further strengthen the power structures already at play in the world.…
