Bradstreet's Lesson Before Dying Summary

Improved Essays
In the beginning of the story we see she is woken by a fire and her first reaction was to say that it’s God’s plan, her saying that showed us how strong her faith is in God, “yea, so it was, and so ‘twas just” pg.29. After she starts to think about it she starts to get upset at the thought that she just lost all her belongings and she’s trying to convince herself that she doesn’t need her personal belongings, but she’s having a hard time doing so, “ my pleasant things in ashes lie, and them behold no more shall I.” pg.27 Bradstreet wants to not have any feeling of sadness that she has lost everything because her religious belief says so, but she’s having internal conflict with herself, thinking she might be sad that she lost everything.

He is the love of her life and kept her safe at all times. Furthermore Bradstreet is trying to show her children to keep God first and he will not make you hurt long because he protected her so he will protect them as well. Now in both of the quotes from Apess and Bradstreet they use God to attract the readers and make them listen to the words they are saying. Apess is trying to prove to the white man that if he is a real Christian of God that he will not disrespect people of different color. But if they do show lack of respect to blacks and Indian people than they are not a true follower of God.…

In the end it was quite clear that Anne Bradstreet’s poem was a way to cope with her loss. I was not the common thing to express this in a male dominated society. To speak out and express your thoughts was dangerous in 1666, however she did so anyways. This poem showed her fear, the way she copes by reminiscing, and finally finding hope by connecting to her Puritan faith.…

Ernest J. Gaines and Grant Wiggins have numerous similarities that have led many to believe that Gaines based the novel A Lesson Before Dying on his life. The similarities between the two men are very significant as the similarities are the basis of the story. For example, both are African-Americans that lived in Louisiana. They both were born on a plantation and later went on to university. After researching Gaines life, I alongside with many others believe that Gaines based the novel A Lesson Before Dying on his life experiences, as well as the people he encountered in his life.…

Bradstreet thinks positively and neglects the negativity that was bound to her from the beginning. She is overwhelmed with sadness as she witnesses flames consume her belongings “And to me heart did cry... my sorrow eyes did cast... my pleasant things in ashes lie” (Bradstreet 7, 21, 26). Her obvious choice of words in her poem express her emotion of despair as she witnesses her house turn into ash.…

In the poem Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666 Bradstreet pleads with God to help her through this stressful situation. “And to my God my heart did cry/ To strengthen me in my distress” (122). Most people would be cursing at their Gods in a situation like this but she is calling out to hers for strength. Not only that, but one can also see how calm and humble of a person she is. “I blest His name that gave and took,/ That laid my goods now in the dust./…

Your Ropes There are many things in our lives that we do or are forced to do that causes us to be held back from our full potentials or something that we desire to fulfill. Matilda endures this struggle, which can be shown by her exclaiming, "From the prison's courtyard it rose, a yellow silk bubble escaping the earth. I vow to do that one day, slip free of the ropes that held me." She gives off a strong message of feeling trapped and not able to make her own choices while looking at Blanchard's balloon flight. By saying this, she means something much deeper than a piece of rope and I feel a sense of relation and sympathy for her.…

In her poem, Bradstreet wrote how much she loves her spouse and how greater her love is compared to the things she has counted in her poem. The first thing she has made into comparison is between her love and the wealth of the world. She says, “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold. Or all the riches that the east doth hold” (lines 5-7). In here, she said that the love of her husband is more important to her than the unimaginable size of wealth that the east probably has.…

Unheard of for Colonial women is the mention of unbelief, but Bradstreet goes further and alleges belief lost and again gained through her own personal journey with God. No mediators are mentioned; it is not counseling or reprimanding that leads her back to religious conviction, but applying scriptures to everyday experience. She sees God in Earth’s wonder, and provisions met, and fro these connections the religious text is read with different…
