Thesis: The critic of Columbus’ “Letter to Luis de Santangel Regarding the First Voyage” and William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation are to show that these pieces of art are detracting from the American idealism that has been engraved in the minds of every American since they were a child. The both also outline values, such as, greed and religion that have developed over time in America. Moreover, these works give a very insightful and reflective view on the many horrors and struggles every new comer to the harsh new world, as well as, the settlers later on had to endure to survive. Bradford and Columbus both had to go through struggles and it wasn’t just an experience they went through it was a common theme in America. John Smith had similar struggles and he is seen as a hero even with his flaws. “Thus far I have traveled in this Wilderness of Virginia, not being ignorant for all my pains this discourse will be wrested, tossed, and turned as there is leaves” (93).
b. Without the exploration or sense of desire for what is not known none of these men would have made important discoveries or create works that are still used today. These men all have this major characteristic which is a prime example of American exceptionalism.
Concluding Statement: American exceptionalism and heroism are the defining traits when looking at the canon of American history. Columbus’ discoveries are achievements of a very high degree and deserve their place in American Literature. Furthermore, Bradford’s writings were literary successes in the sense of bringing to life a common struggle for freedom that is a constant value in American literature.
