Brachycephalic Syndrome Research Paper

Brachycephalic syndrome is “the combination of elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, and averted laryngeal saccules” (Acvs.org). Stenotic nares are narrow nostrils. This is most common among certain breeds who have obstructive breathing because of the different shape of their muzzle, nose and throat. The term “brachycephalic” means short-headed. There are a few breeds of dogs are more prone to brachycephalic syndrome which are the Pug, English bulldog, French bulldog, and the Boston terrier. These breeds are more prone to having brachycephalic syndrome because of their short muzzles and throats causing their breathing pathways to be much smaller and flattened than other breeds. If a dog has very noisy breathing it could be a symptom of brachycephalic syndrome. Brachycephalic syndrome affects the upper and lower respiratory systems as well as the digestive system.
