Both Hersey and Uchida use personal stories to persuade their audience that the United States’ ends did not justify their means. In Hiroshima Mr. Tanimoto ran into the city to search for his wife and child who had just arrived in time for the explosion. When he found them, “ Mr. Tanimoto was so emotionally worn out that nothing could surprise him. He did not embrace his wife; he simply said, ‘ Oh, you are safe’”(Hersey, 30). Hersey’s audience in this text was the american people during world war two whose perspective on the Japanese was that they were inhumane and therefore dropping the bomb was just. here he uses mr. tanimoto’s personal story to show his audience the typical Japanese person with human qualities such as worrying for his family and being “emotionally worn out” from the horrific view of the effect of the bomb on the people running out of the city with severe wounds. this allows the reader to grasp the experience of bomb inspiring sympathy for those who were affected. this changes their perspective and persuades them to believe that the defeating the Japanese did not justify the dropping of the bomb.
