Almost 50% the dolphins that were watched and studied after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill were very ill and 17% of the dolphins observed were not expected to live. The BP disaster occurred during a crucial breeding period for many Gulf Coast wildlife and fish species. The poisonous oil could have killed larval, eggs and venerable young almost immediately, weakening or wiping out that generation. Without these generations, food web effects and population drops could become evident in the areas future. The BP disaster also caused a heavy drop in recreation and tourism in the Gulf of Mexico. Commercial and independent fisheries took in $659 million in fish and shellfish during 2008 and over 3 million people engaged in recreation trips for fishing in the Gulf that year. After the BP disaster in April 2010, recreational fishing was shut down for 3 months, from May to August. State parks were also shut down, which impacted those park’s summer revenues
