The BP Oil Spill: Strengths And Challenges

Superior Essays
BP Oil Spill When presented with this project during class, my group and I knew it would be a challenge, but knew with the right topic we could easily overcome the challenge. We thought long and hard about what topic we wanted to research. It had to be something that was interesting, impactful and well known. We thought of controversial topics, headliner news stories, and topics with familiarity. In the end, we chose to use British Petroleum’s (BP) Oil Spill in the Gulf Coast during 2010. The BP Oil Spill was a crisis and the BP company responded to the event with socially responsible leadership style. We ultimately chose it because it was interesting. When it came to research, we all tried to find different articles on our own to get some …show more content…
Procrastination is always my worst enemy. No matter how hard I try, the deadline always creeps up on me quicker than expected. I always find time to do several other things when I should be working on my project. Whether it be my phone distracting me, or someone asking to go get food, or just being tired and deciding to take a nap, I always avoid doing my work. This is a horrible habit and I need to learn to stop it because it only adds to the stress in my life and usually decreases the quality of work. For example, we worked on our project as a group out in the hallway of Morrill one night, and I found all the research I needed to complete my slides, but I could not bring myself to put the information on the slides. I titled them and everything, all I needed to do was add the content. Of course, I did not because I was going home that night, and that was all I could think about. I did not want to do the project at the point in time because I knew I had more time to do it. So, I told myself and my group that I would get it finished when I was at home. Of course, that did not happen either. It was easier for me to be lazy around my house than to do my project. I waited until I was back at school on Sunday night to finally add the content to my assigned …show more content…
I struggle when I do not have a set plan. I am a very disciplined person, and that was why I just wanted someone to assign me a task because I would stick to it and complete it. I am usually very adamant about doing what I suggest because I do not like change, and like to be comfortable with whatever topic we are dealing with. For example, I was not on board with the BP Oil Spill as our topic, I wanted to do the Chipotle E.coli outbreak. However, Kyle and Rachel were passionate about the Oil Spill, and lead me to see the advantages of using it as our topic. If I could go back and restart this project, I would change a few things; one of thing to change is time management. I think it would have been helpful if we would have met up more often as a group. I would also like to make people have deadlines to complete their part of the project because the uncertainty of the project being done on time worried me. However, I would not change our topic. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the BP Oil Spill: the effects, the fact and how the company combated

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was a tragic mishap on BP’s behalf, killing several rig workers and having many other outreaching effects. The amount of crude oil that was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of approximately three months was 4.9 million barrels of oil and to go along with that, 2 million gallons of chemical dispersants to the Gulf. A major group of crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was discovered along the northern shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico. PAH effected several species of wildlife including Dolphins, the Tundra Peregrine Falcon, and shrimp. PAH or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, concentration levels in May 2010 were higher than in May 2011, a mere five times higher, which indicates…

On March 24, 1989, one of the worst recorded oil spills occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska (Seitel, 2011, p.100). A 987-foot tanker from Exxon Mobil Corp., the Exxon Valdez, spilled 260,000 barrels of oil after the intoxicated ship captain “ran aground on a reef 25 miles southwest of the port of Valdez” (Seitel, 2011, p.101). The oil spill damaged over 1,300 square miles of coast line and caused the death of various sea life, including over 4,000 Alaskan sea otters (Seitel, 2012, p.101). Exxon Mobil’s public relations approach to the crisis received criticism and the mistake affected the company nearly twenty years later.…

A Gulf Oil Spill Rhetorical Analysis As of May 2015, Forbes places that the net worth of the BP company at more than 120.8 billion dollars (Forbes). BP operates in nearly 80 countries and produces more than 3.2 million barrels of oil per day (BP, 2015). Without a doubt, the events of April 20th, 2010 and the days that followed had a profound impact on their business as well as the environment. Cleanup efforts and continued research of marine life and surrounding ecosystem have been extensive, but also costly. At first glance, BP appears to take full responsibility for the spill, however, further consideration shows a clear attempt to minimize effects through the manipulation of power and money.…

Although often identified as the BP Oil Spill, the disaster occurred at the Macondo well and upon the Deepwater Horizon rig. The Deepwater Horizon which was classified as a semi-submersible drilling rig was leased by BP Oil at a cost of $533,000 per day from Transocean, and at the time of the incident was 45 days behind schedule (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan (2013). Records indicate that several weeks prior to the incident, an inadvertent dislocation of pipe in the blowout preventer occurred when a worker bumped the controls which relocated the piping. Although “chunks” of the rubber component were found in drilling fluid, which indicated there was an issue with the blowout preventer, no actions were taken by BP, Transocean (Deepwater Horizon), or Cameron International; the manufacturer of the Blowout Preventer, although regular inspections of the Blowout Preventer are required. Additionally, records indicate that based on the design of the well “Macondo”, 21 centralizers were required to stabilize the cement casing of the well, however, only 6…

In the case of Exxon, the CEO Lawrence Rawl allowed six days to elapse before acknowledging that in 1989 his oil tanker ran “aground in Prince William Sound in Alaska and release 11 million gallons of oil into the sea”, ten days pass before an ad was run apologizing for the event, and three weeks went by before visiting the accident site (O'Connor, 2011, p.1980). Conversely, after the BP spill Tony Hayward, immediately apologized, flew over the affected zone, spoke with the media often stating that BP would absorb the cost of establishing a $20 billion fund for repairs, as organizational members participated in a joint press conference with President Obama to assure the American public their organization was strong and would not increase prices to cover the liabilities of such a disaster (O'Connor, 2011). These actions on BP’s behalf demonstrated how they were taking responsibility for their actions tangibly to mitigate the damages (Wickman, 2014). However, a shift in rhetoric was emerging as blame was being placed on Transocean who they lease the rig from, and Halliburton who was responsible for the cementing (O'Connor, 2011).…

Eleven people who were aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig were killed on that day due to the explosion (BP Oil Spill, 2015). Aside from the danger from the initial sinking of the oil rig, the oil that entered the environment after the explosion aroused suspicion of being dangerous as well. In February 2010, before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, unusual mortality rates of dolphins started to be recorded and researched; a fact BP uses to deny any causation of increased mortality due to the oil spill. They argue that other factors play roles in dolphin death, including exposure to fresh water, cooler climates, red tide, and diseases such as Morbillivirus and Brucella. Because of these other potential causes is it hard to say if the increase in deaths is from the oil spill, but one group of scientists decided to look into the what the cause may be. The unusual mortality event triggered a popular study done by a team of NOAA scientists led by Lori Schwacke (PhD specializing in marine animal health) to look into the potential link…

Do you remember watching the news in April 2010 and seeing what would later be a total of 5 million barrels of oil being spilled into the Gulf of Mexico? That was the beginning of the worst oil spill in U.S history which lasted for 87 days, spread more than 130 miles in the ocean, and killed 11 people in the initial explosion. It was BP oil company and its contractors who ignored the warning signs and proceeded to try and extract oil from a well that was not considered entirely secure. Some of these signs included skipping the final cement evaluation and misinterpreting results from pressure-tests. The well could not be contained because both of the valves used to stop the upward pressure of oil failed to work and warning signs to the rig,…

First and foremost, clearing of toxic waste will never be completely, absolutely, 100% eradicated. As with everything in life, there will always be room for error when disposing of waste. The precautions and heavy regulations put upon businesses and companies that handle toxins and chemicals detrimental to our environment are made to limit the chance of error. In almost all cases, every step is made to prevent events such as oil, chemical, and waste spills. When those regulations are not fully followed many businesses are fined millions upon millions of dollars.…

Any student who takes an introductory biology class knows that humans create more waste than every other species combined. Much of this waste stems from our selfish over utilization of the resources found here on earth. Results of this can been seen during the BP oil spill scandal. However, waste production occurs even in beneficial establishments like hospitals. Waste is produced in hospitals in multiple areas, such as the cafeteria, used medical tools and toxic materials produced by operations.…
