Boys State Camp Experience

Learning about the government, playing sports, meeting new people, and staying at a college for an entire week was a great experience for me at Boys State. On my way to the camp, I was anxious to arrive because I heard from previous campers that they had a great time. When I got there my thoughts had slightly changed, but I was still impressed. My experience at the 2016 Mississippi Boys State camp at Ole Miss was a life altering event because I was preparing for the change from high school to college, living away from home, and developing new friendships.
While I was at Boys State, the first change for me was adjusting to the college lifestyle. For example, my first day at camp was a little frustrating. It was move-in day and everyone had to get registration filed, name cards, T-shirts, and dorm keys. There were about 400 boys in attendance, so patience was key. Figuring out where to go and getting situated was tiring if one was by themselves because I had to carry my entire luggage to different locations before I finally settled into my dorm room. One of the cool things about Boys State was that we had counselors that were in college so if anyone had questions about the college lifestyle they could answer them.

Since there were many boys at camp, the possibilities were endless to meet a new person. Each person had their own unique talents. One guy I met played guitar and liked some of the same genres of music as me. Since I like to play the guitar as well, we both connected through music. Other guys that I met worked on political campaigns, played some of the same sports as I, and lived in areas near me. The best part about meeting all those new people was that I will have long-lasting friendships with them and see them at other places. For instance when I went to other camps after Boys State, I still saw some of my friends from Boys State

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

For seven years, I enjoyed a weeklong summer camp at Camp Ernst. I swam, kayaked, rode horses, and participated in arts and crafts. Each summer, I dragged myself from the sleepy summer rut in which I always fell and woke up for polar bear swims and archery practice. Although I have long since ended this routine, the camp greatly affected my social skills and my perception of nature and of my family.…

There were new faces all around and I did not recognize anyone from my other classes. I joined JROTC as soon as I could because my sister was in the program ten years ago and loved it. It was one of the main reasons I selected FLHS as my high school. I got familiar with my AI, SFC Madison, class leaders and my classmates quickly because we were in squads and were pushed to work together as a team. During the first week, my AI gave our class a challenge: whoever could memorize the cadet creed perfectly would get a water bottle with the Army logo on it.…
